As some you may be aware I have problems with stabling my NF even for short periods of time at the moment. I thought he was cured as over the winter months he did not mind being in at all but from mid march he has turned into a stable jumper and has even jumped through a weaving grill.
I have been super lucky that he has not hurt himself more than a few scrapes. He does need to come in occasionally for worming as the yard uses pramox. The vet has given me ACP but after he jumped through the weaving gill last night and broke it I am wondering if ACP will be strong enough to contain him. Someone also said ACP could be dangerous to geldings as it causes penile disfuntion  but it is dangerous for him to jump out too.
I have just ordered one of those prision type grids but wondering if he could even get out of that somehow.
He is more than happy to stand tied up on the yard and is sometimes happy to stay in but it is always on his terms eg if there is not much grass etc.
I was nearly in tears last night when got through the weaving grill V and had to have a valium to calm myself down luckily my friend notpoddle was on hand for a supportive chat.
She even made me this photo to cheer me up

What an awful situation - I fully sympathise! Just a thought - have you got the facilities to try a small yard with an open stable/shelter that he can choose to go in and out of? When I say a yard, I mean just a small area he can roam around in rather than a paddock. Then he may not feel so shut in.
Good luck with it anyway :)

A couple of years ago I moved my boy to a yard where the horses had to come in a night in the winter. He had never been stabled before and on his first night he went crazy!! I got him one of those lik it snack a balls (the red one that you put food in) and just but a few handfuls of high fiber cubes in it and it kept him quiet for ages. he then got to the point where he loved coming in because he knew he would get his ball :D
Can your horse see other horses from his stable?

Yes he has a lickit but does not like it and has a permanent next door neighbour as the horse next to him does not get turned out as it jumps out of fields!
There is no option to make a little yard outside his stable as am on a big yard and there are lots of stable near by and the moment I think the temptation is worse due to lovely juicy grass in the field and not being interested in hay as he has a full grass belly.

Just a thought, when my boy has been in i`ve used a radio. I used to change it from Radio one in the am, to classic fm in the afternoon, may sound daft but might be worth a try- just don`t put it on your local station, if it`s anything like ours, he will defo want to get away from it!

Hi, Poor you! How stressful! Duke gets extremely stressed in a stable and gives himself laminitis! When my yard began restricting turnout even further I moved him to a new yard. He now lives out all year round and only comes into his stable once a week at most. I know that doesn't suit every horse, or indeed owner, and moving may not be an option, but I thought I'd mention it.
When Duke is in he has a snack ball and I've put up a mirror in his stable. He's happier with his stable buddy in there with him! I didn't buy one of those expensive ones I just put sticky back mirrored paper on a board and put it on his wall. It takes up quite a large area in there and he stands admiring himself. :D

he lives out already :o and just comes in for eg worming and farrier and stuff. i suspect he may beat the radio to death if it's not to his acquired musical tastes :p

(angel will have a word with him tonight i think! about how lovely it is to stay in one's bedroom and munch on hay, and how staying in is the new going out!)

I found on another forum that someone else had the same problem with their newfie and it took 4 months of having the grid up to sort it out and it was bucking madlly and trantruming so perhaps it is a NF thing and someone else said they had to hobble their NF to get it to stay in and another has to be sedated.
Hopefully the new grid will arrive sooner than the quoted 10 working days as the local tack shop did not have so had to order one on line.

If you have major problems my friend uses crossties for her stable jumper, seems to have worked okay for him :)
