when changing a dressage whip to the other hand which hand should the reins be in when changing?

Gather the reins into the hand that the whip is in, use free hand to pull whip thru, then put reins back to normal position. Voila - whip is now in the other hand.

oh, and make sure you do this in one incredibly graceful and fluid motion, with absolutely no loss of contact, with horse being completely cooperative and not coming off the bit, so that nobody even notices that you've changed the whip:D

For longer dressage whips, hold both reins in hand that has whip,
grab whip with free hand with your thumb close to handle end and make an arc with it over the horse's wither. It's awkward at first.
