i have a miniature shetland who has been on half a sachet of danilon aday since the end of jan, now ive read things that dont add up, some people say its fine and it wont hurt nothing, others say no its not a good idea to use it for that length of time, i called the vets to ask but the receptionist said there wasnt a vet available to talk to atm but she couldnt really advise me anything and just said "i dont really know i should think its ok" can any of you guys enlighten me a little if any of you know or have a horse on danilon yourself. thanks

As far as I am aware, Danilon is not as bad as bute for causing long term damage. I would imagine it is all relative.
My Skippy was on Danilone for the last year of his life. With it, he had a bit of quality to his life, without it he was suffering - no contest. My vet assured me that it could take years for any damage being caused by Danilone to show up and as he was 18 it was hypothetical.
He did have one slight touch of colic but that could just have been coincidental.
He died in november and the danilone had nothing to do with it so I cannot comment on what might have happened long term.
For me, the decision to keep him on it was down to keeping him as happy as I could. I would rather all my animals had shorter, happier lifes than longer ones in pain. Its all about quality of life for me.
If there are other options to try for your little pony then perhaps you should but if you have exhausted all other possibilities, and your vet is recommending it, then I would happily put any of mine on Danilone long term to keep them happy and comfortable.
Bit rambly so hope this helps

yea it helps alot ty, he damaged a bone in his leg by pawing at the fence to a horse in the next field, he is 16 but very young at heart and fit but also a lilttle bit arthritic in his back legs when its cold, nothing major though he still bombs round the paddock, frightens me sometimes as im just getting him back on track after his injury, he is a stallion so likes to act like one aswell when he see's other horses but i cant keep him stabled as its not fair to him so i let him in the paddock every day for afew hours he is fine when he goes out but always comes in with a slight limp, there as however been a HUGE improvement since jan as he cold hardly walk at all but you hear so many stories about different things i just wanted to actually see a real live human actually reply to me rather than reading various different web sites all telling you different things that could have been written by anyone who hasnt actually experienced it for themselves (if you know what i mean)
how ever he did have a touch of colic about 3 weeks ago, i was in tears he just lay there with his legs stretched out and he already looked quite dead, ide lost a horse the week before and was still recovering from losing her so by this time i was quite emotional as i was trying to drag him up n down the lane to keep him going, but after afew good farts he seemed fine and back to his normal self, i did call the vets again and asked them if the danilon could cause the colic and they said "they doubted it"
thanks for replying and sorry to hear you lost your horse, its never easy but sounded like he had a good life with you :)
