How much schooling, hacking, lunging, long reining do you do in a week? I wanted to get Vic fit, trained and toned in the summer! I'll be doing 1 show jumping competiton a week and 1 day off so how much hacking, lunging schooling should I do to get him working on the bit more?

lots of long hacks are good for fitness (as they increase stamina)
due to where i live and circumstances i try and work my horses daily. i mainly school (between 40mins and 60mins depending on how long it takes to get to where i'm going to school that day) although i do lunge sometimes. my lunging doesn't just consist of circles... i "play" too so that can last an hour, gets me fitter and helps the horses fitness... it depends on the horse too though... dawn is most unamused if i even consider "playing" with her.

At the moment I'm schooling about once a week with lots of fast hacking in between to build up fitness. I'll school more in the winter when it's too wet to hack!:)

At the moment, I'm trying to school Lucy twice a week under saddle, long rein once (usually over poles or jumps as she's learning to jump) and hack out once short and fast (40 minutes trot) and once long and enjoyable (ambling through the Downs mostly walking with a few canters or gallops). On average one of the sessions tends to drop because of time constraints, but lately I've been good at keeping it up and the fitness difference is wonderful!

Edited to add: if I'm showing on the Sunday then I'll drop one schooling session during the week and go on a long hack on the Saturday. If the weather is rotten (only have grass school), then I'll hack out every day and try to do my schooling like that (which is what I do in winter too).

I school each horse for 2hrs a week. Pessoa once and hack out the rest. They also get the day off after a show. Think hacking is the best for fitness.
