View Full Version : So Where Is Everyone From?

I'm from Vancouver, Canada, and I have been enjoying this forum immensley :Dbut have noticed most of the members from England? I have great nostalgia for UK as my first riding lessons at 8 years were in a yard near Portsmouth when my stepfather was in the navy. I also spent some time on Isle of Bute at Cames Castle(navy quarters for officers and their kidlets) so I have an affinity for Highland ponies. Many years ago my family emigrated to Canada from Ireland,Wales,& England. One sister married a Dubliner(whose family had a riding school) and another married a Brit.My mom married 3 Brits(a serial marriager ). I love reading your expressions and seeing photos of cobs, thelwell ponies, and glimpses of your beautiful english countryside. This is a real warm and fuzzy site for me-oh yes and I love black English tea-they never make it right over here-(pale and tepid.)

I was wondering if theNR members are from England only, or are there others from other countries and Continents enjoying tuning in to a 'Bit of horsey Britain' in the evenings?

I'm not sure if you wanted members from outside the UK to answer? I'm from the UK, not that far from Portsmouth. I imagine that the scenery in Canada must be wonderful for riding.:)

Don't suppose that would have been HMS Dryad?
Used to ride there before it closed :D Small world!

I'm from the UK but now live in France. The French are in awe of English riding & are generally very disappointed when they see me ride:p They think we're all top class professional riders, have the best riding hats & the best tack shops (I do agree with the latter!)
I love English tea too, you just can't get a good cuppa here:rolleyes:
Your expression of "a serial marriager" really made me grin:D

Deepest, darkest, South Yorkshire! They really do still have flat hats & whippets round here. Have only been back 7 years though, lived in Spain but worked in Germany (weekly commute) before that. Loving being back "home", I'm no fan of Spain.

The beautiful New Forest on the south coast of England. Ancient hunting forest - although personally am glad to say that hunting is banned now.
Ponies, cows and donkeys (and pigs in the autum) living wild on the moors and woods and wandering the roads and villages. In my nearest village you often have to manouvere past a donkey leaning in the post ofice doorway to get by.
Nearest big cities are Southampton, Winchester and Bournemouth. Southampton is good for shopping, Bounemouth is a busy seaside town right on the beach and Winchester has lots of history - beautiful cathedral, King Alfred, capital of Wessex and all that.
Downside is amazingly expensive area with lots of houses sold as holiday property or for wealthy people commuting to London. Some bits are very busy in the summer as millions of tourists come to visit - don't blame them as it is lovely. The riding is fabulous with almost no roadwork at all but the livery/grazing prices are astronomical.

I love trying to explain this :D! I live near Milton Keynes in England (hence what it says for my location ;)) and i'm basically on the borders of 3 counties, i'm in buckinghamshire, but next to bedfordshire and northamptonshire :p! It does mean we nip across a lot and i know my way round bedford better than MK :o. I've got lovely expensive livery, not a huge amount of greenery near me, and a tiny smattering of RSs - not exactly Horse County :p!

i'm in Bradford, West Yorkshire at a "down to earth" livery yard. Bradford is a very built up urban area, so all our rides start with busy roadwork. But once you get into the woods it's amazing. I always think how lucky i am to be enjoying the countryside on horseback. Riding through the woods, i personally wouldn't swap for anywhere else on earth! I would love to try riding a bit further afield though and have always wanted to visit Canada.

I'm in the heartof the black country between Wolverhampton and Birmingham! So very built up but we do have great pockets of countryside and quite a lot of horses just not ones you could walk to! Where I train and where my share horses are kept there is some good hacking and you sometimes forget how close the cities and the motorways are! I come from Berkshire though so proper horse country and to add to the international feel half my family live in either California(where I've had great western experiences) or Australia!

15th Jun 2008, 09:03 AM
Yet another Hampshire lass here and I keep Joy in the Meon valley which is stunning. With the exception of the New Forest I have probably the best hacking although my hacking is more varied in terrain even if not so abundant :D

I never have to do the same ride twice and even the start of my ride I have 6different options to choose from.

The main problem I have is that I can't afford to buy land in the area for Joy.

Even the New Forest is cheaper because investor are buying up parcel of land in the hope of getting planning permission in the future whereas in the New Forest this isn't such a problem.

With land prices being approx £25,000 per acre with no facilities or services the land my mare is on is worth more than I can afford :(

I am in the Highlands of Scotland, about 40 miles north of Inverness but originally from Hartlepool, North of England, we have lovely forestry almost on our doorstep, where you can easily hack all day long, not that I do :p.

I was a force's brat - Parents both served out in Canada (dad with Canadian air force for a while then RAF. Have lived in Gibraltar (no horse riding :( it was before the border opened) Cornwall, Scotland - west and east coast, near Inverness in fact - fantastic riding:) now live in Devon. Great riding again. It's only since moving to Devon as a grown up that I've been in the position to own my own horses. Have one now, a superhero with a lazy stubborn streak, incredibly patient and a penchant for peanut butter sandwiches (apricot jam an optional extra). Coffee drinker:o - me not the horse;)
Oh, and I was born in Darlington, Co Durham so have been known to lapse back into straight talking yorkshire lass!

Born in boring old Leeds (West Yorkshire, North East-ish England), still living in boring old Leeds! Built up, grey and urban with lots of road work like Bradford (next door city) but once in the woods it can be gorgeous with great scenery and hacking! Have also lived in Sheffield (S. Yorks) and Northampton, East Midlands. Never rode there though. I work with a lass from Vancouver who never lets us forget it! Also got a couple of friends going through the emmigration system to move to Vancouver Island in a few years...me...jealous!?!

Alle-which Hawaiian island do you live on? We often are on Kauai-and there are some lovely trails with mountain views(Bali HI), jungles, beaches-rather humid but sooo picturesque. A pretty hefty price to trail ride- but the horses deserve it.

Flash Harry-the baked beans in Canada are 'to die for"-your friend must be kidding-it is the great Canadian staple-we have beans with our famous Quebec maple syrup, barb-e-cue, tomato sauce and the creme de la creme-- beans with molasses sauce.:p Every cowboy, hiker, sailor has their can of Canadian beans.:D

I am on Oahu, and while there are some great trails here, they aren't close to where I am at. I am considering moving to a place that does have some trail access...and even access to the beach, even though horse riders aren't supposed to ride on the beach there. :) They go really early on Sunday morning so they don't bother the normal beach going public.

Kauai is such a gorgeous place! You should let me know next time you're over here!

Only downside is that most of my riding is done on my own as big horses cant keep up with the Icys and a few of my friends horses are scared of them. And i dont know anyone who could ride 1 of mine and be safe! grrr

I've been meaning to add myself to this thread for ages...!

I was born & raised in Norfolk, UK, and moved out to Hungary a few years ago to 'do horses' !!!! (Never going to be rich!)

I live almost smack in the middle of Hungary, in a converted 1800's school, in a tiny village (population about 20!) between 2 small towns, and on the edge of a National Park. Hacking is bliss, no road-work (unless we go looking for traffic for training purposes!) and VERY friendly land-owners who don't mind where you ride! On the down-side, it's VERY hot now (too hot to ride - hovering beween 35-40 degrees!) and in winter it can hit minus 20!

"I love English tea too, you just can't get a good cuppa here". It isn't widely known, unless you work in the trade, that tea is blended according to the water hardness/softness in the area in which it is to be sold. Obviously this works in the UK but probably not in France. However, if you have your tea sent over then it would make sense if you are in, for example, a very hard water area, to have it bought in London, etc.

I'm rather partial to iced tea. Very refreshing in hot weather. I remember having hot sweet black tea with mint leaves in it (no milk) in Egypt. Oddly enough, it was more refreshing than cold mineral water.

Isn't a mint julep sort of iced tea with alcohol?

40 degrees???!!! I'm not sure if i'm jealous or not! In Britain we've had a bit of a cool summer so far, but 40degrees might be a tad too hot for me! Do you get a chance to ride much during summer if it gets that hot?

We live in south-west Victoria, about 5kms from Great Southern Ocean. Is mid-winter with temps between 4 and 13 on average. Summer time average high is about 25. Worst of it is the screaming gales we get on and off all year (mostly winter though). Best is easy access to beach and lots of quiet roads for riding.

Thanks for the mint julep answer.

As for a horse related drink, I know a group of people who, when they stay over at shows, get together and have Pimms parties on the Saturday nights. Not a drink I enjoy, I'm afraid, now they only make the one variety of Pimms base

Where do you ride!!? My Dad worked in Bahrain for a year, I came out to visit in Feb, we had nice 20 degrees weather that time of year :D I can't imagine riding in Bahrain, the whole island is full of buildings, oil raffineries and pipelines! Not the most attractive of places, hardly any wildlife left and nothing but desert to the south (but you aren't allowed there because of the US navy fifth fleet?) so where do you manage it?

I am in the heart of the fens in Cambridgeshire, used to be very boggy and flat until the fens were drained and now it's just flat. I live in Ely, ride in Coveney and work in Cambridge. I do the daily A10 commute, so I sit in traffic for 2 hours a day basically.

I grew up in Eindhoven in the south of the Netherlands and (I LOVE shamelessly showing this off) learnt to ride at a KWPN stud/riding school, the same stud that bred and owned stallion Concorde, champion Grand Prix showjumper sired by Voltaire. :D

Hi -

I live in Pennsylvania in the US, about an hour northwest of Philadelphia. We live in what was a mostly rural area, but has been built up recently and is becoming more of a suburb. We have lots of place to ride. My RS is 5 minutes from my house and my horse is boarded on a 30 acre farm about 15 minutes away from us. The farm is adjacent to a large state park with 15 miles of riding trails and varied terrain. This park also connects to a historic trail that is 20 miles long, so there are lots of great riding opportunities here!

It's great to hear from people from so many places on this board.

I'm having two 30-minute lessons per week and enjoying every minute. This morning I managed to trot 12 time around the school without stopping, then did the same in the opposite direction. When I started I couldn't manage half a lap!

To anyone thinking of getting back into the saddle after a long break I'd say Go For It, you'll never regret it. All you need is a sympathetic instructor and, in my case anyway, a very gentle Shire horse >g<

 You must live in a different Milton Keynes to me :D

I live in MK too and find it wonderfully horsey...over 50 miles of connecting bridleways, surrounded by rolling buckinghamshire countryside, it's own eventing centre and just up the road from Addington.....to add to that 3/4 massive tack shops either in MK or in the surrounding villages and it feels like heaven to me. Plus it is brimming full of Livery yards and I have managed to avoid any expensive ones and am now on my third :)

I have spent the past 2 decades in central London and ride in Enfield/Southgate. Originally from New York. We moved from Manhattan to the north shore of Long Island which is very horsey (think'Great Gatsby'), lots of shows and a level of snootieness that I don't think you can even imagine in the UK. No hacking, though. Everything in the American suburbs is built for cars. Very serious polo and showjumping. Oh, before anyone asks, no western riding.
I like the urban/ horsey balance I have now. In my dreams I'd have a huge house and a neddy for each member of the family in the back garden.

Collier Row, Romford, Essex which is on the border of East London. How Lovely you're in Vancouver! I went there a few years ago and we went over the Rockies, Icefields Pkway etc. so beautiful! Was going to ride there but ran out of time!! So nice to see where everyone is from on here.

Born in the South of France but I am an American. We travelled a lot as OH was a sailor but came here from Virginia. We have been living in the South West of England (near Bath)for the last 16 years and have owned my cheeky Welsh Cob for the last 14 years. (First pony):)
