I know how long is a peice of string but......
We have a pony who has started behaving a bit oddly being ridden, fine in walk and trot but "antsy" in canter, head down, shaking head, bucking, not always. Also jumping, fine then again antsy and bucky. This all started really suddenly, about the time she had her first season. This is her first summer with us!
Hadnt really connected the ridden stuff to her being in season because she isnt marish in any other way, you wouldnt know from her behaviour on the ground, sweet as ever. But have been wracking my brains to see whats changed as we want her back how she was! So am thinking could be hormonal-does anyone else have a mare that shows changes under saddle only?
Its not grass btw, she is a potential laminitic and has only 8 hrs t/o in a bare paddock and soaked hay.

maybe she has pulled muscle in the field running around or fallen, easily happens maybe get back checked or possibly saddle.

maybe she is just sentitive more in the canter and can deal with walk and trot ,as you no when its the time of the month i sure wouldnt want someone on my back espeically jumping its like humans, some dont get any affects some people are in really bad pain maybe ring old owner and ask about it!

Horses seasons don't last very long. How long has she been misbehaving?

From my experience, mares that are grumpy when they are in season are grumpy on the ground and in saddle. My mare puts her ears back and tries to hunt me down with her hooves (fun fun ) and I don't bother riding her when she is in season as I might as well throw myself off. It only lasts for 3 or 4 days though, on those days I leave her in her paddock. She's on the extreme end of mares moods though.

It could be pain related. Different muscles are used to canter and jump that are to walk and trot.

Very confusing, it could be a lot of things.
