Why does this happen? My new shetland had his hooves trimmed but they're growing back quicker than I thought was possible. It's been 2 weeks and I'm getting the farrier out tomorrow. Can't afford to get him out every 2 weeks :o

My retired TB girls have really fast growing feet, as they just don't wear them down.
Thankfully since I started my paddock paradise system and have a hardcore area in it they are starting to self trim.

My little ponies feet grow like wildfire. I think being chronic laminitics has something to do with it. They just seem to shoot forward. Torchy in particular is very bad for it. He has Cushings so I dont know if thats connected.

It is likely that he foundered in the past, he's 30 years old now so anything could have happened.
My farrier advised to start feeding him a brand called healthy hooves? Not sure why that would be any good as I thought it promotes faster growth, but I'll give it a crack anyway.
I'm going to take a short course in minor hoof repairs, so I can give them a rasp inbetween trimmings, might save him a week or 2.

Laminitis causes the feet to grow very fast, what does your blacksmith say about it ?

I asked my farrier but he said that is the way it goes for some ponies. I've only had the shetland for a few weeks so it could just be a once off, fingers crossed...

Cupcake and Skewbald - Interested in a mini course on rasping too. My farrier gave me an old rasp, cause mine keeps pulling chunks off, so when they are hanging, I saw then off with a knife, and rasp just so nothing is sharp for him scratching his ears etc.
I keep them in my handbag. Silly that I know. I always pull them out in the shops with my change. At least I can say I carry him with me all the time.
Back to growth, his grow madly when the grass is good, then suddenly stop growing for months, and is doesnt always co-incide with the grass growth which is the puzzling thing. This spring we went from 5 weeks up to 9 weeks and he only rasped there was nothing to cut even.
