Hi I am going to try my friends horse today. He is a very green young 5 yr old highland. I am used to riding schooled horses/RS horses. Are there any general pointers or advice you can give me.
I will take him in the school first and then if all goes well out for a hack with my friend.

I think the best thing is just to ride quietly and stay calm and try not to dwell on the "youngster" thing too much;)

I would suggest you see your friend ride him in the school first then get on yourself. This will give you an idea of what mood he's in and to see how she handles him. Enjoy!!

be confident and tell them what you want, its no different apart from he might need more instructions.
i agree with letting your friend ride him first just so that she knows what mood he is in, and to put your mind at ease as well.

Ooooh:D
Well mainly you need to be patient and understanding as if he is green he might not understand what you are asking him to do. You need to be assertive but don't push him too far - I ride a youngster and theres times I won't push him any further because he gets agitated easily (big time napper!) which tends to lead to rearing.
You'll be fine, just remember be patient, calm and understanding and don't ask too much of him. :)

thanks everyone...did what you said nice and calm, didnt ask too much. I was getting quite worried about riding such a green horse but it went great and after 25 mins in the school we had a gentle hack out.

Pleased it went well for you! Isn't it a shame that our doubting minds often make us anticipate the worst when really there's not a problem at all!
