I shouldn't think it matter too much about a run-up, just so long as you've got some space to get a nice circle of canter established you can pretty much jump anything..
and what I've been told about height is that they can generally jump their own height! although I don't know how true this is. It probably depends on their abilities, etc. Some could do a bit less and some could probably even do higher.
Do whatever you're both comfortable/capable of I say :)

It doesnt matter about how high the horse is. It all depends on his heart!!! Some 17hh horses wont even go near a tiny crosspole purely because their speciality isnt jumping, whereas some 13hh ponies are jmuping 4 foot and clearing it easy. It all depends on the horse. In my opinion you should really be asking your horse the question about how high he will jump. You never know he may be really good at jumping ridiculous hieghts or maybe he cant really jump any higher than on those pictures. Its up to you and your horse alone to discover. Make it fun though. The funner it is the more likely we will be willing to try all the harder. As for the "space" to jump have you ever considered going on a fun forest hack or maybe to a field that isnt in use and find something to jump to practise there. If there is nowhere then place the jump in the centre and at an angle so both the sides where you are supposed to jump over are facing the corners of the arena. Then canter him and turn at the corner and jump straight, therefore you will end up doing a figure of 8. Sorry I cant explain much more clearly. I hope this helps you. Good luck in the journey to finding out how high your horse really
