I try to come up with a nickname for each horse I ride. The names I come up with have more to do with the horse's personality than anything else. Some of the names have been applied to more than one horse (where applicable).....

Little One-This one to refers to age rather than size. (The first horse I started using this nickname was over 16 hands tall!) I got into the habit of calling the youngest horse at the barn this, and have been using it ever since.
TroubleMaker-Different people in our barn use this nickname for different horses, but in general, it is used for a horse that likes to test a rider's ability and therefore likes to cause trouble. :rolleyes:
Houdini-Who doesn't have an professional equine escape artist in their barn??? :D
Crank-We once had a horse that ALWAYS put his ears back whenever you were in his stall, and often would put his ears back and act crabby (not mean or anything, beginners could ride him) when you rode him. So, he earned this nickname.
Evil Pony-This one was used for a horse that had a pony mentality (in terms of creating mischief) for riders who weren't paying attention and keeping his mind occupied. (If you didn't, you might find yourself looking at him from the ground wondering HOW you'd gotten there.)
Mr. Bounce-Our barn doesn't have this horse anymore, but he had a bouncy trot with a gentleman's personality (he was the PERFECT horse for one of our disabled riders), hence why there's a "Mr." in the beginning of his name.
Furry Cement Block-Our barn once had a pony that was very furry. The "cement block" part of his name referred to the fact that when the horse first came to our barn, he didn't bend around corners at all. Someone came up with the analogy that it was like trying to bend a cement block and the name stuck. :p
Speed Bump-This name fits one of our barn's current horses perfectly because like speed bumps for cars, the slower you are going, the less of a bump there is (even then it's still noticeable) and the faster he's trotting, the higher you'll be thrown out of the saddle. (We had a foreign exchange student ride at our barn a summer or two ago who was still learning English. A problem arose when our coach tried to warn her that the horse she was going to ride had a very bumpy trot. Turns out, she didn't know what the word "bumpy" meant. Let's just say she learned firsthand what the word "bumpy" ment directly though this horse. :p)
Bud-I mostly ride geldings, and must admit I've probably called all of them this at one point in time or another. I typically use this when I'm on the ground, giving them a pat or leading them to/from the arena.
Brat-This one really isn't a nickname, but I have been known to call them this at times when I'm frustrated. :eek:
