View Full Version : Do you like yourself in your riding hat?

We've got Hippyhorse looking like a model in her thread & I had to comment on a photo from an absolute stranger the other day cos she looked too good in a hat too. I'm getting really paranoid cos I look like a total pleb in mine! Doesn't help I have glasses & hair that's not short but too short to tie back so pokes out of the bottom. I seriously hate myself in my riding hat, would rather wear a full face motorbike helmet to be honest. Think I've just got one of those brows & face shapes that is always doomed to look like a potty head in any kind of hat.
Anyone else the same or do I have to dislike you all? Men need not reply BTW, have yet to meet one I don't fancy in riding gear so I wouldn't believe you if you said you looked bad in yours lol.

I hate me in a hat :o Jockey skull caps make me look like a UFO is landing on my head, and so far the one that suits me best is my Harry Hall, but I still think I look ridiculous... but better ridiculous than broken :D
I quite fancy a motorbike-style helmet as well - when I had my bike I had a tinted visor which would be perfect for riding out on days like today and to keep the sun out of your eyes :D It was a bit warm in there, though, but I guess it would keep your ears warm in winter! :D

I just hate myself in a riding hat - I can't find a shape that suits me (unlike my daughter who looks wonderful in any shape of hat) so I think I must just have one of those faces. Slightly better in a skull-cap with silk but only marginally!!

Nope I certainly look a muppet! It would appear I technically have quite a small head so when i put a hat on they always look enormous & like they are balancing on top of my head!
So, no do not like myself in a riding hat of any description!

Hat Hair - I even wear a wolly beanie in summer after riding cos I so can't do hat hair. If I can't find a wooly hat before I go to the stables (which is often in this house, we have a black hole somewhere) I switch on the knitting machine & knock a quick one off rather than go without. Defo growing my hair again cos it's so much better just to be able to tie it back.

I've given in with the hat hair thing....normally I have straight, messy hair (think Elliot from Scrubs) but wax + hat + sweat =
Ah well, I look like a gimp, but at least I still have a head :D

i hate skull caps full stop.....
will only wear 'posh' showing hats. i have to get one with a small crown other wise it looks odd on me, but it doesnt look too bad.
hat hair is ok i just stick it in a low ponytail. tend to have a shower though because it gets greasy from my (old) hat.

lol i know having a fringe is awful!! you straighten it in the morning and when you go riding it has kinks and sticks up!!
hats just makes heads look huge and it doesnt help when you have a big head anyway!!:o
so to answer your question No:D

Some people do carry them off better than others..me - I'm always on the look out for something lower profile - I already have a big head, but my Harry Hall one is pretty good and I like the air vents..my skull cap type makes me look like I'm wearing an old fashioned motorcycle helmet and it also gets really hot underneath!:p

I can't get a velvet hat that fits my head so I wear a skull cap which makes me look like an atomic mushroom. Its got a cover to try and make it look like a velvet hat but I still look a total idiot in it but if it keeps the old bonce protected.

Well thank you very much for that Trundle(tenna is in the post)!!:D although personally I think it makes my head look huge(big enough already as wear a size 3 skull cap/71/4-1/2 peaked cap!) I think my son's hat makes him look hilarious same make as mine but he has a little head and it looks soo huge on him and he gets worse hat hair than me!

I'm lucky because I have never been able to give a stuff what I look like.
I don't do fashion or makeup nor fancy haircuts.
So the fact that I look like an egghead and that jods aren't the most flattering of items for this Mrs Blobby don't really compute! :p
It's comfort, practicality and safety all the way for me :D

Skull caps with silks always make my head look aboslutely huge for some reason. My velvet hat, not so much but I still reckon it makes me look totally stupid. I have one nice piccie of me in a riding hat that I like where my head doesnt look like an out of shape football

2nd Jul 2008, 04:25 PM
My Champion vented hat isn't too unflattering - the hat is fine - shame about the face underneath. :o
The big problem for me is also the hair. I get a tad hot when riding - think beetroot face - so when i remove said hat I look like I've been standing in a thunderstorm for an hour!! Only solution - removal of the many inches of insulation that I carry around with me. Maybe I need a grazing muzzle....

My sister says I look like a WW2 German soldier in my skull cap! I recently bought a Champion hat to take on holiday to Spain which looks more like a cycle helmet, shiny plastic with loads of vents. Not very pukka but light weight, lower profile and definitely more flattering (and easier to pack - will fit in hand luggage!)

Totally agree.
The only time I regret the look of my hat (because my ears stick out:o) is in photos which hardly ever happen (the old fashioned velvet thin and useless hats looked better but safety is the most important thing)

Me too, but I look even worse in a hat. I have a very 'flat' profile and short hair that tends to stick up everywhere when I've had my hat on. My close-fitting blue velvet hat is OK but if I wear a skull or vented hat I just look ridiculous. My size 8 friend has tumbling blonde curls almost down to her waist and a lovely leggy TBX. I feel like a munchkin on a Thelwell pony when I'm with her!
Raingodz - I think you look very dashing, and I LOVE your siggy:D

Yep, I like my riding hat - means I don't have to worry about my hair - lol!! I've been obsessed with horses since childhood and have wanted my own riding hat for soooo long - I still cannot believe I have both horse and hat!!!! Coupled with the fact that the peak of the silk has gone sort of ripply AND the satin has come away, showing the plastic bit underneath, it's really not a good look :D:D

4th Jul 2008, 01:55 PM
To be honest i don't usually worry about it. It's one of those niggles at the back of my mind that might come out occasionally and if i had the money i'd invest in a J3 because i think they're lovely or a nice slimline hat but daydreaming aside, i haven't got the cash anymore to buy a new hat so my old faded black mushroom hat will do :) As long as there's something on my head for safety i'm not too vain about it. If i ever win the lottery i can assure you a posh new hat is on the to do list :D
p.s don't you just find there's some people out there who are always annoyingly lovely even with a big hat on their heads. :)

The helmet is there to save a life, not look pretty.
I would not be here typing to you if I did not wear an helmet, when I had that accident.
I have two different new ones...
This is the Tippery, DH likes that this one protects the back of my head more than other helmets would.

I don't particularly care about what I look like when I'm wearing the thing, because without it I wouldn't be riding. It's just as essential as a saddle and bridle.
However - the hat hair thing afterwards is baaad! I've just got a Champion Ventair and that is brilliant. It's quite low crown, not too bulky and when you put it on, you can feel the air squish out of the vents. When I take it off, my hair looks much better than it did when I wore a normal skull hat and far better than when I wear my Charles OWen SJ.

Depressing lack of difference :p! I've always looked awful in them so i sort of accepted it! And i'm going to make a shocking confession now - that's the same hat :o! From age ten to age 16 my hat size didn't change and the hat didn't take a whack so i just carried on wearing it :o - if you look at the second pic; i look that size now on the pony in the first pic - that's how much i grew - but my head stayed the same hat size ! .
Nope :D! I'm the only one out of my riding group who wears a BP, too - so i always get even hotter ! Both me and the RI put on our big heavy waterproofs yesterday because it was piddling it down - dried up as soon as we got out and i was sweltering by the end of my lesson! Normally i keep my hat on for as long as possible to hide my hair - so i'll turn out in it (yard rules mean you have to anyway) i untack in it, rug up in it, everything, then dive in the car and whip it off when no one's watching! But yesterday my mum was going to be an hour or so late picking me up so i went to sit in the house - i obviously had to take my hat off in there so i was sat with these icky sweat patches from my BP and tangly, matted looking damp hair clinging to my head *wants a vomiting smilie* - then to make it worse one of the staff came in to sit down - she's one of those really irritating sorts who could go out hunting then take her hat off at the end and not have a hair out of place, or slightly red cheeks, or get slighty messy in anyway shape or form  - so she sits her size 6 backside down on the sofa and says she looks a mess and terrible and haggard - i was just thinking 'have you seen who you're talking to??? I look like i just went round Badders':o!

Well as of yet i havent seen anyone pointing and laughing hysterically so i'll carry on thinking i look like the best thing since sliced bread  I have another hat that i havent worn yet as it was a self indulgence and is far too nice to be spoilt by wearing it although im sure everyone in the yard will chuckle merrily to themselves if/when i do wear it muttering under thier breaths something along the lines of "more money than sense.." and rolling thier eyes with a knowing smile :o

I look stupid in my riding hat. I am overweight and I have a fat face that is only generally remedied by being able to wear my hair down. Of course with the hat on the hair has to be tied up otherwise it blows in my face when I'm riding and drives me up the wall, and I look like a fat mushroom off the Nintendo Mario Bros

I never used to, but after so many years of riding I think I have gotten used to myself in them now!! Both my hats are quite a nice shape, and I don't do skull caps at all.
