I have the following planned for my horse this summer: -

* Couple of Working Hunter classes (local level only)
* 5-day riding holiday in Wales (5-hours in saddle each day)
* 2-day endurance ride (20-miles one day and 11 miles other day, if fit enough possibly 20-miles both days)
* Various different hacks/farm rides ranging from a couple of miles up to 20-miles some with jumps etc on shorter rides.

Now I don't have a problem with fitness levels as I know how to get my horse fit enough for all this I'm just worried about ensuring she is fed correctly.

14-yr ex brood mare, prone to lami,
Current feed
* Small breakfast (1/2 a big round scoop of corn & small scoop of speedibeet)
* out on grass all day, can be turned out 24/7
* when not out all day 1-hayledge net at night.
* Tea (1 large round scoop of corn & small scoop of speedibeet)

What should I be feeding her to ensure she is getting everything she needs? Are there any supplements anyone can recommend.

Currently work load: -
* Schooled twice a week (30mins each time) every other week one of these sessions is dropped and changed for an hours jumping lesson.
* Hacked for anything between 1 - 3hours 3-times a week.

She is currently carrying a little excess weight but not much.

Any advice would be great.

I would feed high oil such as baileys outshine so it's slow release but constant to keep her going for the 5hrs it's expensive but worth it. Maybe an allround vit and min supplement too.

Instead of chanign feed i would just buy some cheap oil such as rapeseed or corn oil and add a coffee cup of it everyfeed. it will almost double the calorie intake depending on what you feed. means your not having to phase in and out other feeds so is less likely to upset your horses stomach (or your budget ;):D)

Tried and tested by Me for Kia!!!

Corn and haylage for a lami prone horse could be changed to hay (ad lib) and baileys Lo Cal which will give all the nutrients required. Speedibeet and oil is good for slow release energy, but introduce the oil gradually otherwise it'll get the runs.
