AFTER MY 5 YR OLD BEING DIAGNOSED AS HAVING LIVER DISEASE A MONTH AGO I HAVE JUST HAD A 2ND LOT OF BLOODS COME BACK AND THERE ARE SIGNS OF PREVIOUS LIVER DAMAGE BUT HE IS IMPROVING, - THANK YOU GOD. I HAVE ONLY JUST PURCHASED HIM AND FEEL THAT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A PREVIOUS PROBLEM FOR HIM. SYMPTOMS - HE JUST CAN'T SEEM TO COPE WITH TOO MUCH WORK. HOUR OF HARD HACKING - 15 MINS SCHOOLING. HE'S BEING RESTED NOW, VET SAYS I CAN START LIGHT WORK BUT I THINK I MIGHT JUST GIVE HIM A BIT MORE OF A BREAK. HAS ANYBODY HAD EXPERIENCE OF THIS? I'D LOVE TO KNOW IF HE WILL EVER BE ABLE TO COPE WITH HARD WORK AGAIN OR IS HE JUST GOING TO BE A HAPPY HACKER?

Sounds like he must have had the damage before you got him. I know in some horses the liver recovers well and they can go back to 'normal', for others it doesn't. I'm sure your vet is the best person to advise you on the long term outlook. I hope he recovers well.

My boy had quite bad liver damage a few years ago, as a 2yo (most likely ragwort).
He's made a recovery - we can't know if it's a full recovery without surgery, I believe.
3 years later, he's been backed, living a happy ridden life like any 'normal' horse, and hopefully on the way to some endurance and dressage. I'm aware that he might not live quite as long as he may have done without the damage, but he's a happy, healthy horse with a bright future.

I'm not a vet, and I don't know the extent of your lad's liver damage, but I do know that horses do recover, and they really can go back to 'normal'. It might not always happen, but it can. :) Remember to speak to your vet about this, as they know your horse and his health.
I hope he makes a speedy recovery!

Get him on milk thistle as soon as possible.

he is on milk thistle and equisup and appears to be improving. i took him out on sunday for a light hack and he coped much better than he has done in the last few months. just hoping that it's not a pointer to something else being wrong with him. i'm having another blood test done in 3 weeks and i will have a really good chat with my vet then. have asked for more thorough investigations to be done but vet says this is the route they normally take and like you say would not be able to tell without some form of surgery, so i'll see how he goes and keep my fingers crossed. he is such a lovely boy i hope he comes good. also if the vet signs him off (if next bloods are good) i may try global herbs restore as i've heard nothing but praise for this - i'll see how he goes. many thanks for replys - any info gratefully received..
glad your horse has recovered '4 white socks'
