View Full Version : Regripping reins?

I have some lovely Barnsby rubber grip reins that match my lovely Barnsby bridle, so v nice, big brass buckles, v good quality :) But I obviously have been fondling them a bit too much because the grippy bobbley bits have worn smooth where I hold the reins. I tend not to ride with a very firm contact so it's not normally a major issue but it can be a problem xc - especially if Mrs P gets sweaty, then the reins just slide through my hands and we end up hoooning . Anyone got any idea whether they can they be 're-gripped', or do I need to get some more? Thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestions

It's not a big job to put new rubbers on them.

Thanks Wally. I've just checked & a new set of Barnsby rubber grip reins is £35 direct or £25 on eBay, but they don't match my bridle as they have billets. Sounds like regripping will be the best option - I'll see if my friendly local saddler will do it. If not, is it something you'd do? (Cheeky I know - feel free to tell me to trot on with that suggestion!)

What colour grips are they? I only have brown and black in, I can get the orange ones, would also need to know the width. Should be written on one end of the grippy bit....if it's still there!

They are black, can't see any writing on them but the plain leather bits of the reins are 5/8", the gripped bits are an inch wide. The grips have very small bobbles on them - I think this is a Barnsby thing & it does make them very grippy but they have taken less than a year to wear out & I'd happily have normal 'big bobble' grips instead.

I think I have some 5/8 ordinary bobbly grips in. in black. If not I can get them.
'tis up to you. Have a think.

PM me an estimate and we may well have a deal ;) The saddlers round here are not great, I couldn't find anyone prepared to even consider tweaking the flock in my Thorowgood (although the lovely Poohsmate sorted it for me this morning, thanks mate :) ).
