i just bought a new 15.1 coloured horse.
its a commera mare and got lots of attiuted.
it competed at horse of the year show and came 2nd in a 1.25 jumping class.
when i go into a jump she was never tought when to take off.
The other day i was doing a 1.10 double and she took the trot pole and first part in one which i didnt think she could do and got funlg forward.
so if anyone has any ideas how to teach it thanks.

Are you having jumping lessons on her? If she took the trot pole and first element in one, she's taking off far too early. Was the distance correct for her? She might have felt uncomfortable with it and then gone for the whole thing!:D Grids could help. But best bet would be to get an instructor to look at her and you in action if you haven't already as there could be a whole manner of things that need adjusting.

How experienced are you? If she's been to HOYS and jumped around 1.25m classes then she must have been taught to jump correctly, maybe you just don't know the right aids she needs yet. I'd echo horsesforever and suggest you get an instructor to help you - or maybe even contact her old owners and see if they have any suggestions?

Hello and welcome to NR.
Well she certainly is not a conemmara as they do not come in coloured!!
It is very unusual for a 15.1 to be successful in BSJA as the striding is wrong for them so to be jumping at this level she certainly will adjust her striding as you ask her. What exactly do you mean by ' not taught when to take off' it is your responisibilty to place her correctly to let her do that. When you say she took off at the 'trot' pole what distance was this, I personally would not be riding down to a 1.10 double in trot, and would be dubious about a placing pole.
Like the others have said have you a good SJ trainer

Tango is 15.1 & has longer strides than a 16.1 I know & is more than capable of making the hieght, dont assume the horse is not capable on her height!! lol ;)
...Sory if that offends some one but it doesnt sound very realistic, if you dont know how to tell a horse to take off/ride it correctly should you have a horse that is capable of jumping 1.25 and jumping 1.10 ?! if this isnt a joke?!:rolleyes:

Hannah, congrats on your new horse!
How long have you had her and how well do you know her?
If you don't yet feel at ease with her strides, perhaps focus more on ground work for the time being. As others have said, if your mare has successfully competed at 1.25, then she does not need to be *taught* how to jump!
It sounds like your mare might have been overwhelmed by the placing pole coming into a 1.10 double - the stride may not have been perfect for her and as an experienced show jumper she made the executive decision to clear the whole thing in order to be prepared for the second part of the double. Sometimes when we are hesitant with a decision, they take it for us.
To help you though, you'll have to tell exactly how you organise the approach to your jumps, what you'd jumped before attemping the 1.10 double, etc ...

i have an irish drat x conomara little bigger than urs and i take her into 1m10 at a trot some times dont worry about doing that if the power is ther take the fence how you feel, i oftern go back to basics as do many a show jumpers working the placeing pole before the fence it never hurts any one togo back to the basics with fences, my mare has a very powerful back end and sometimes againest the clock i will pull in at some very big fences on tite angles wher ive had to drop to a trot to get the turn and we still get over them with just one canter stride the impulsion you save up thats when to reliese it god knows how but she does id take couple lessons as with the more experienced show jumpers they no ther job inside out mine certainly does she doesnt mind change, some times it does confuss the matter good luck to you she sounds like a lovely horse youve bought and maybe she can teach you a bit about show jumping that you didnt no from her experience in the ring enjoy her
