Those of you with two horses (only)... what do you do when you just want to take one out (off the property). ?

I had a 'babysitter' horse who was great and didn't really mind being alone but sadly he dies in January - we moved on to our own property now so don't have lots of other grazers around and for the first time have to worry about it.

I currently have a grazer as my third horse but with winter and lots of rain the grass isn't coping well with three of them. The grazer is a 2 y/o and my young boy is 18 months old so they play alot and have little regard for preserving grass in muddy conditions!!

To be honest with you I would just ride out, they eventually get used to the fact you are coming back. One of mine was better stabled and the other best left in the field if I went out so would just do that with them no probs

My 2 are like hinge and bracket, so in love :). I had the same problem well still do actally, be as above I take one in stable and go out. I find it safer to do this then leave one in field going of on one. They do get use to it after a while as they know they will see each other shortly afterwards!! :D

It does depend on the horse. Neither of ours is great when the other is taken away, but both are better in the field than the stable.

One interesting thing I have found is that if you take Sennie's fieldmate out of the field and leave him behind he panics but if you put him out in the field first, i.e. on his own, he's much better.

When they were on their own, i could sometimes sneak one out without the other noticing

they aren't on their own now, but to begin with dyl went to peices when J went out. he was much better stabled than left in the field.

Some get used to it after a while - once they know the other is coming back. Mine are better off being left in the field - they run around a bit and have a shout, but soon calm down. If I stable them they just get upset at being in as they can't see what's going on. If I'm taking one out in the trailer, I give the other a bucket of chaff whilst I'm loading (they tend to wind each other up when the trailer is in sight which then makes the other hesitate at loading!), that keeps them quiet and by the time they have eaten, we've gone and they seem happy.

i agree ...just go. I often leave my 8 month foal while i take my older pony out and vice versa. I find the foal is better left in the field where now she goes of to graze until we get back and my older mare is better in a stable when i take the other out. They still call each other but now only when we are leaving and when we are about 5 secs from home. eg....i'm just popping out! ..........um, i'm home!!

I lease private land so there are NO other horses around here.

I have 3 but was in the same boat last year if we went to a show, I would always take 2 of them because one of them wont travel on his own! I always had to bring number 3 in for the day ot he would be under the field fence or something equally as silly in sheer panic.
