After researching, traveling to Holland for a Kuering, hoping and planning I was finally able to bring my first Friesian Mare to my farm. She is 18 years old, in great shape, a real sweetheart. But, would love any advice on her care, exercise, and wondering, if healthy enough, if there is an age limit to breeding her.
Just found this site and would welcome any and all feedback...thanks;)

Hi there!! As long as she is in good condition there should be no problem with breeding from her at that age, I know of a mare that is still breeding foals at the age of 26! I accepted a working rider position at a fresian stud in SA, and will be attending a show in 2 months time to do dressage with an 8yo gelding. They are fantastic horses to work with and have stunning temprements!! good luck ,let me know how it goes:)

Sherveen...Thanks for the information. I am so excited to think this time next year i may be an expectant grandmother!:D Sounds like you are having the time of your life...working to make sure that friesian's are always in my future now...trying to get my husband to get another friesian that he can ride but he just wants an American Saddle Bred Dapple Gray Gelding...nice, but not for me...

If she's she physically fit enough and has bred before then she should be fine, although do bear in mind fertility is much lower the older they get. Friesians live until they are around 23 so still time left, but do make sure you get a breeding soundness examination done by a vet before thinking about it. You also need to do it sooner rather than later as this breeding season is coming to an end really, especially since you will need swabs and blood tests done before she can go to a stallion.
As for care just watch her weight as friesians tend to be very good doers so can get fat very quickly!! - my lot do every year so I try and get them to loose condition over winter so they don't turn into Jabba the hut in the spring!, they just get add lib haylage and no hard feed, except the broodmares for the last 3 months of gestation and the stallions.
Welcome to NR by the way!:)

blackhorses....Wessels is absolutely STUNNING!!!!!!!!! How many foals have you bred from him?

triniGirl.... lol, keep trying and perhaps he'll give in sooner or later;) Thats what i do with my mom's boyfriend cause he decides if we are allowed to get more animals or not, keep asking and never give up! and now i have 3 horses, building a barn with 6 stables and preparing for an arena........ haha. I love it when things go my way ;)

Quite a few now of our own, and a good few outside mares too, I think it must be about 17 or 18 of our own Wessel sproglets, all have been rather nice!:D:p

I dont know much aboit breeding, but i believe that if she hasnt been bred from before, strting at 18 could be dangerous
