I'm on a local police e-mail distribution list and I get regular newsletters about whats happening locally and any warnings.

I've just had a warning from them about local tack thefts (Cambridgeshire) and some general advice, including the use of smartwater to deter thieves.

What is smart water!?

I've forwarded the mail to my share ponies owner and she doesn't know either.

Oh! Thanks Mike, that looks pretty good actually! About £55 for equestrian products annually and if I've read it right that does your lorry and all sorts as well.

Pedilia, they weren't that specific, just that it was a growing problem in the county. In fact, I'll copy and paste the message here.

TACK THEFTS

SADDLE AND OTHER ASSOCIATED HORSE TACK THEFT IS A CONTINUING PROBLEM
WITHIN
THE COUNTY.WE URGE ALL HORSE OWNERS TO BE AS VIGILANT AS POSSIBLE WHEN
IT
COMES TO STORING EQUIPMENT.

TACK ROOMS ALTHOUGH MAKING OUR LIVES SIMPLE ARE ALSO PROVIDING EASY
ACCESS
FOR THIEVES TO LARGE AMOUNTS OF VALUABLE EQUIPMENT. WE ENCOURAGE OWNERS
TO
KEEP SADDLES ETC. AT HOME RATHER THAN IN YARDS WHICH ARE OFTEN
UNOCCUPIED
THROUGHOUT THE HOURS OF DARKNESS.

SADDLE MARKING & THE USE OF SMARTWATER WILL HELP DETER THIEVES AND ALSO
ENABLE US TO REUNITE OWNERS WITH PROPERTY WHEN IT IS RECOVERED.
SIMPLE SOLUTIONS SUCH AS KEEPING DOORS SHUT AND CLOSING GATES ALSO HELP
TO
PUT OFF INTRUDERS.

IF YOU ARE OFFERED CHEAP HORSE TACK FOR SALE PLEASE ASK YOURSELVES THE
QUESTIONS "WHERE DID THIS COME FROM ? HAS THIS PERSON GOT THE RIGHT TO
SELL
THIS EQUIPMENT ?

REMEMBER IF A DEAL SEEMS "TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE" - IT USUALLY IS !

There is actually a much cheaper option that works in just the same way but you only pay the once - no recurring annual registration fee:

www.selectadna.co.uk/forensic-coding-domestic-kits/DNAHOME.html

I've used this myself and was very impressed with the whole package. 50 applications is the minimum you'd get so it works out very cost effective. HTH

Smart water was used on CSI last night:)
I dont know how well, it would last on tack though:confused: I know CSI is just a show, but they said it only lasts about a week, then comes off with washing
Wouldnt stamping saddles etc with a postcode / countrysite watch reg number and the old faithful peminant pen / luminess paint for rugs etc be a better option? and prob have better recovery rates that smart water. We mark all out rugs, so its clear from the road, with freezemark numbers, so potential theves know the horses are protected too:)
