I currently put soya oil in dawn's feed for the extra calories :p I was in a shop today and saw some carren oil... more expensive than soya oil but not as expensive as linseed oil.. i'm aware there is flax oil also....
what is the difference (other than price ;)) of all these oils :confused::confused:?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but think flax and linseed come from the same plant? There was a thread on H&H a while back on this - http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/showflat.php?Number=2762053&page=0

Soya obv from soya plant (with associated GM issues but we won't go into that :))
Have to say I've not heard of 'Carren' oil before, cant find on google either.

Just to clarify, the American's call it flax, we call it linseed! All the same!

Linseed is particularly high in omego 3 and 6 oils and can be used as micronised linseed which is less messy than oil!

flax and linseed are the same thing.... it does contain a good source of omegas.

i did a lot of research into these oils a while back - see here; (i use and swear by dengie's hemp oil - called joint&condition) Blue has a full tail this summer ;) :)

very interesting points made on your thread BW... any ideas about carron oil? i found this site when googling curragh carron oil (http://www.trm-ireland.com/products/english/curragh-carron-oil.htm). it looks to have omega 3,6&9 but that's as much as i understand :p i may look into getting some hemp oil (instead of soya oil) when i next get some oil. Harry is allergic to soya oil  but doesn't need oil in his feed anyway... Dawn could do with any extra goodness i can find ;)

carron oil is not a pure oil - its a blend , mainly consisting of linseed oil, blended with lime water.

Googled this -
http://dictionary.die.net/carron%20oil - is an oil used in the 1900's as a topical application for burns.

and this -
http://www.equinequalitycare.co.uk/shop/catalog/details?shop_param=aid%3D9%26

think you may want the latter :D!

A much better alternative to either soya or linseed oil is to use linseed meal. You can purchase this from either Simple Systems http://www.simplesystem.co.uk/ or Equus Health http://www.equushealth.org.uk/

It is a natural anti-inflammatory, contains omega 3, 6 and 9 so good for joints, coat and hoof, also safe for laminitics and horses prone to tying up. the meal is easier on the gut than the oil too. when mixed with water it forms a gel and aids digestion.
