quick question (might seem silly) - but would a size 14/16 person be able to ride comfortably in a size 16 1/2" saddle (english GP)? (in general and as a rough guide). thanks!

I'm size 10/12 in jeans, haven't got a big butt, but find a 16 1/2 too small, I ride in a 17 in, so it may be too small for a size 14/16. you should be able to fit a hand between your butt and the back of the saddle.

Saddle sizes actually go off thigh length, not weight.

That can depend a little on the cut of the saddle too, I have a lovely SCS which I think is a 16 1/2", my bum fits fine (I'm a size 10) but my knees poke out the front of the knee rolls, I also have a cheap nasty saddle I bought for when Milo got fat, which actually fits lovely (although I havent' measured I'm sure it must be a 16 1/2" too) and my knees are fine on that, so it may be worth trying a few.

Generally I would say it depends where you carry your weight, I'm not sure my saddle would be big enough if I gained much on my bum, but also worth remembering extra weight over a small area is harder on the horses back. Not saying a size 14/16 is too big for a saddle that size necessarily, just something else to take into account

Dont forget the length of the saddle on the horses back either. Short horses might not be able to take a longer saddle.

Generally though a 16.6 should be OK for that size of person unless they are very tall.

Although remember that even if they fit in it, if their weight is on the back of the saddle then they will be causing pressure points. A horse will cope better with a marginally bigger saddle with proper weight distribution than a smaller saddle with all the weight to the back.

Saddle sizes mainly go by length of leg from hip to knee but bum sizes will come in to it to a point. You need a hands width between the bum and the cantle.

I flucuate between a size 10 -12 and am 5'7'' so need a 17 1/2'' inch saddle to accomodate the length of my legs.

I would say that a 17" would be more comfy. That is my size and I use that size saddle.

I would agree I'm a 12 and ride in 17" but find that in some saddles that a 17.5" would be better

I'm 5.5in and a size 12 on a good day, I have a size 1 barefoot treeless which is supposed to be the same as a 17", also have a thorowgood 17.5" which is fine as well. My old horse was in a 17" and that fitted us both, no probs.
I would say, that as long a 17" was OK length wise for your horse, you would propably find it more comfortable for yourself.
