Hi

I have eventually got my two tbs to a proper size (due to neglect by previous people )

I was feeding them topline conditioning cubes,speedi-beet,alpha a twice a day.
But with the time of the year change i was told by other people not to feed them this time of year as they are not doing any work apart from one of them now being lunged and lightly schooled.
They have good grass and plenty of field to run around in to there hearts content.
I did cut them down to one feed at night.but im not sure what is right. i have had horses b4 but these two are my first tb`s and i was sorta dumped with them to start with.
could n e 1 please advise me what they are feding theres.
thanks

Hi ya bit of a difficult one, I'll tell you what I feed mine...

Handfull of chaff
Blue chip original
Spillers instant energy

She's in light to med work, show jumped and is 19years old.

That's not really going to help you I'm afraid! Do you have any pictures of your tb's? It's very easy to over or under feed a tb and control fizziness in some!

Do you give them any suppliments?
Do you have any concerns about how they look or act now?

I've had horrible weight problems with my TB, and finally I think we've done it and got his weight up to where it should be:D
I've drastically reduced his feed to the minimum recommendation, as he was still gaining weight, so I think it's time we move off the conditioning feed and on to a maintainance feed. Right now, he's getting 600g Calm & Condition a day and a flat level scoop of Alfa-A oil, with NAF Pink Powder.
I've decided that once the current sack of C&C has only 10 days or so left, I'm going to put him on Ride and Relax for the rest of the summer, as it should help him maintain his weight. Depending on how he is when the weather starts to cool, I may move back to C&C for the winter to keep his weight on (he lives out all winter), and then back onto Ride and Relax through the summer months.

I always feed him all year round :) I have tried to cut his feed out altogether, but the weight starts coming off again . Even when he was turned away and not working, he needed to be fed.

They're not all terrible doers who need feeding up to the eyeballs, especially if they don't do a lot of work. Mine just gets a couple of small scoops of alfalfa and half a scoop of simple system endurocomplete pellets along with a mug of instant linseed daily, she's in light to medium work and has boundless energy :)

It very much depends on the horses. If they are a good weight now & you are happy with it then I would slowly reduce their intake of food & keep check that they are maintaining weight. If they start to drop build the food back up again.
My TB is in light work (hr hack daily - walking). He is out from 6.30am - 7-8pm daily with 2/3 slices good hay at night, He is fed 1/2 round scoop calm& condtion, 1/2 round scoop alfa a oil & 2 scoops NAF Pink Powder daily. I am slowly reducing this as the belly is now growing!!
He may come off it after this bag for a few weeks & just stick with alfa a oil for the bute to go in & see how he gets on.

Mine is 26, he gets half a scoop of D&H 16+ mix and a scoop of mollichop veteran with a spoon of garlic granuals for breakfast, then the same for dinner except he has topspec senior in that. I am thinking of switching the 16+ mix for calm and condition as people seem to be getting good results with that. He is a bit underweight, you can see his ribs a little but he has a nice shiney coat and doesnt act his age :D he does get ad-lib hay at night but can be fussy with it.

Mine is on,
1 scoop of cherry chaff
1 scoop calm and condition
2 handfuls of barley rings
seaweed
garlic
vit and min supplement (which he loves and trys to eat from the tub if he can!)

I have reduced it to taht much as he is out on good grazing, I did reduce it further but he started to loose weight again so uped it to that as he will maintain on that.

He was plenty of energy still though!

In the winter he will have a feed that size twice a day (supplements only once a day though!) :)

Ours (13 yo competing and schooling , 6 yo being restarted and 18yo doing 2hours 4 days a week steady schooling) are on grass 24/7 and doing well. Some hay if they come in for a few hours rest if weather wet.

Grass is on good Leicestershire clay and well grazed.

Last year on 'hard feed' diet 13yo was constant visitor to vet hospital.

In winter two have Alphaoil chaff, special TB/sensitive mix and unmollassed sugar beet, the oldest has conditioning cubes in place of special mix. All have pink powder supplement. They have about 1/2 a small bale (15lbs) of hay a night and about 8 hours grass turnout.

Sorry a bit too late to reply - but my TB just has grass really and she's looking well covered and shiny, but it will be a different story in the winter.
