View Full Version : Stopping cribbing?

Since being put in a stable at Massey, Tally's remembered how to crib. He was stabled a lot with a previous owner and it didn't do wonderful things for his brains or his opinion on confinement, he seems to be a box-walker, a door-banger and a cribber when put in a stable.

Anyway, now when I put him in the yard, if he gets bored he starts gnawing on the fences, he doesn't truly crib but rakes his teeth across them and chews. It's not a big problem yet as in his paddock he's fine but I'd like to nip it in the bud.

I tried putting dishwashing liquid on the fence but he seemed perfectly content licking at that, so I found a tube of wasabi on the shelf and tried that. He loves the blimmin stuff. He spent the entire time licking the fence, nickering happily. I tried putting a whole lot on and he was delighted.

Any advice?! Experiences!??? I was thinking chilli powder but he'd probably like that too.

Can you get stuff called cribbox over there? NAF do it & company called Hydrophane I think. You can get one which you paint on - its brown, thick & gooey & smells horrible! You can also get a liquid spray too. Works for my horse on the places he is not allowed to destroy!

My horse hates Cribbox. Won't go near the stuff. Don't get it on your hands tho cos it does taste truly foul:rolleyes:

I read somewhere (probably on here :)) of a remedy that never fails. Apparently you need to dilute a fresh pile of poo in a bucket with a bit of water then paint the 'solution' on the fence. I haven't tried it myself (our fence chewer has left the yard) but it sounds like it would work, bit messy though!

Nothing constructive to add I'm sorry but loved the wasabi comment.
made me chuckle to picture Tally eating sushi. :)

Actually I remember now that we used to put citronella oil on things the puppy was chewing like power leads and plastic planters and it did the trick. You need gloves though to stop stinking like it for a week and you could put it in a spray bottle with some water and spray it along the fence I guess.

I can't believe the wasabi didn't deter him!! I would be spouting fire! Cribbox is sounding like a pretty good option.

He's a big fan of the wasabi, I keep a tube in my grooming kit to bribe him occasionally and he loves licking it off my fingers, in polite terms...he's a freak :D He'd probably dig in if I offered him sushi. I tried lemon juice as well, he had stuffed down one lemon and was heading to the next before I could stop him.

I found something which stops him, zinc cream. He's very, very offended by it and won't go near it.
