picking up speed

how can i pick up speed on the barrel horse im training without gouging with spurs or smacking with a whip i dont want him to hate running the barrels because hes afraid of being jabbed or whacked but i want to get his hard headed tail faster than a trot without bucks or rears

That's a difficult question...........


I don't know if a horse trained fairly and lovingly, with respect for it's beauty and ability, could ever outpace a horse trained to be savaged by spurs and forced to react instantly to the whims of the rider.

Perhaps barrel racing's not your sport. :)
