Hi There folks,

Just wanted a bit of feedback,

My horse has a Dropped Hip, basically an old Pelvic Injury due to a rotational Fall as a 3 year old and this has caused him to be tilted at one side. If you look from the back of a horse he as one side higher that the other. The horse is now 11 years old and has an active life Prelim Dressage , Amateur SJ and is in quite a high level of fitness with careful management. The question I would like to ask anyone in the forum is >
has anyone else had a horse with this condition and how have they managed it?
how sever was the injury and what treatment has the horse had?

My other query is which a Blacksmith or similar person of knowledge may be able to help with is - That as the horse has a certain tilt to one side the wear is not the same on each hoof and leg which has the tilt I was going to ask my Blacksmith to put a thicker shoe on to balance out the difference in level? does that sound bizarre anyone? In humans I know they treat such conditions with a thicker show etc to level up the difference > I am not sure if this would be the same in horses and whether i maybe would be adding to his probs than trying to resolve? any responses welcome on this. My Blacksmith may also think i have gone slightly mad! I stress my horse doesnt have a major tilt but this idea may help ?

Any responses appreciated

Kelly

My horse had an accident in the field about 3 years ago where he damaged his pelvis on one side quite seriously. He lost all his muscle on that side & was 'short' on that leg - he didn't track up evenly.
The only thing which made any different - and it made a significant difference - to the point where muscle is almost even on both sides, was an osteopath. He was absolutley fantastic & horse just moves completley differently!

yeah, he gets the same osteopath as Hedge Hunter the Grand National Winner every six months to check him over and make sure hes ticking over ok.
Thats been really crutial is keeping him fit. The Blacksmith im going to try and speak to and see if he can put a thicker shoe on one side - as over the longer term as he goes through his teens I want to at least try and eliminate as much arthritic conditions from the injury if I can assist his balance and level him up anyway to avoid putting undue stress on the supporting side I will.
Hes also joint supplemented up on the cortaflex
