I've noticed over the last few days that both jerry's hind fetlocks look puffy just above the joint. He isn't lame, and when I press the lumps they are quite soft and dont seem to bother him.

Are they windgalls??

What causes them???

He is 7 and i've had him for 4 years and he's not had them before. He is turned out 24/7 at the moment. He is quite a big horse and I'm very cautious about doing too much on hard ground as he already has 3 x splints, (albeit 2 were caused by him and rest of herd breaking out of the field last year ). He is in light to medium work at the moment.

My 12 year old mare has these as she spent years being driven when she was younger. They dont usually bother her but this past week one has become more inflamed and she is resistant to put her weight on that leg. Box rest tends to make it worse, ive found turning her out and very little exercise til the swelling goes down has worked for me. hope the links prove helpful to you.

Windgalls are soft squidgy swellings, they sound exactly like them.
