Hi, If you have a lot of feather, it's odds on you have FEATHER MITES.
These create scabby sores at the back of knees, in heels and on the lower legs. Wash regularly with antiseptic disinfectant, and keep skin soft.
An old fashioned remedy is to mix Vegetable Oil and Sulphur Powder to a paste, and apply to affected parts. It is an on going problem, so prepare for this in your management.
If your horse is always stamping his back feet, spraying the legs with an insect repellent also helps BUT NOT IF ANY SKIN IS BROKEN.
CLEANLINESS is paramount and works.

My percheron mare had lived out for 3 years when we got her this spring and was infested with lice. The vet prescribed a shampoo which you can only get from them. I can't remember what it was Der....... It worked! For mud fever I have always softened the scabs with udder cream, picked them off and washed with anticeptic wash. A friend with a heavy cob tried everything with her cob and in the end found the best way was to leave the feathers on and spray with Frontline which is a flea spray for cats. Good luck

coyote is our pig oil and sulphur guru :) it's something i've never tried but i know others on here have (with great success). My cob had problems with mites and occasional mud fever so i whipped all his feathers off and he has the injection to treat mites. Works very well :)

Sadie144, Stumps as you know isn't as feathered as B but her loaner ended up giving her a jab from the vet, is that an option?

Dont know if you are still interested, but I have been using coopers spot on for my boys mites. I use the amount reccomended for a small cow (he is a 15.1 HW cob) every 4 weeks and it has kept them totally at bay. And after 6 years of injections, creams, shampoos, lotions, sprays, supplements, and not to mention hundreds of pounds for sedation for clipping, this is the best thing I have used. It is easy to administer and in my case started to work within 48 hours. Fab. Honestly he has not so much as itched his legs since I started using it and all his sores have cleared up!
Just remember, this is not licensed for horses so as always please please make sure u do a skin patch test before you start to use it. I got mine from the internet, it cost just under £40 and should last me 6 months.
