hi everyone, Iam returning after a long break away. I had my paddock reseeded in April this year with a paddock mix especially for horses (bought on ebay) trouble is there is as much rapeseed growing as there is grass and I cannot find any links to say whether this is bad for the horses or not. Fortunately they are elsewhere currently, but I need them home soon as the paddock they are in is well down now. I know the general rule is if it is yellow it is bad, but I have known horses sleep on rape straw and eat the seeds and they look wonderful. Any thoughts on this out there please, do I have to reseed AGAIN or would it be ok to just have the plants cut or left alone?? There are thousands of rapeseed plants so pulling them all out would take till next year!!!
HELP !!

Wally, Thats a great website, loads of helpful info on all sorts.

On the rape matter, surely, if the rape doesnt flower and seed, it wont come back next year.

Therefore, is it possible to let it grow, top it and let it die away over the winter?

Some fodder rape has a tap root, does it not???? so it might come back.

have to ask Uncle who used to grow the stuff.

hi, been told by local farmer that this is not rapeseed but a weed which looks exactly like it and that it will die off over the next year, but still do not know if it is harmful to horses, has flowers (yellow, identical to rapeseed, with long shoots coming off now ( like rapeseed), been told this weed can lie dormant in soil for years until field ploughed, just gets worse and worse, and I still am no closer to finding out what it is and if poisonous to my horses aaaarrrggghhhh!!!!

If it is yellow, are you sure it is not ragwort. Can you put a pic on here for us to comment on.

I know for definate it is not ragwort as I have spent last 8 years pulling the stuff up by the roots and poisoning any remains, discovered today that it is wild mustard

I know it is definately NOT ragwort, been pulling the horrible stuff for last 8 years in and around my paddock and at work with 6 stallions.
