Has anybody had an illness and been aprehensive about riding again. I have recently had labyrithitis an ear infection which effects balance. It sounds minor but the room spun for 6 weeks ! I am slowly getting better and went back to riding which I really enjoyed but the back of my mind still feel bit worried. Anyone had any similar probs?

My sympathy to you entirely, I had an ear infection, mis diagnosed by the doc. ended up deaf in both ears and unable to stand up without staggering about like a drunk. feeling sick and eeeuuuuk!

Last year I had to have major abdominal surgery, I now have a "zip" from my belly button down to below where the sun don't shine (you get my meaning!!!)

I was SORE for 2 weeks, after that I came on in leaps and bounds and by week 3-4 was doing foot trims on the Shetlands, it didn't say in my advice leaflet not to, it just said not to drive or do any vacuuming for 4 weeks post operation, which I didn't!:D :D

By week 4 I was back in the saddle again for 2 hours at a time. But I have some very, very trustworthy horses who I trust totally to be slow and kind. If I didn't have such kind horses I may have waited much longer before I risked riding again. As it is I think the exercise and fresh air made me better, faster.

Dear Crazyhorse,

You poor thing, what a horrible illness it is. My sister ended up in hospital with the same thing a number of years ago, she was so ill with it. I remember, she had to keep her eyes closed for the first week or she would start throwing-up (sorry to be so graphic!)Just take things steady, I know her balance took a long time to be completely reliable again, she would suddenly fall over if she moved her head too quick for quite a while after the initial recovery!

Get well soon.
A

Thanks for your kind words! Out of interest how long did it take your sister to feel completely better I just wanna know that I'm normal!! I understand exactly how your sister felt the first week was awful I couldn't move and I was on holiday ahhhhhhhh! Did you have periods of feeling ok and than feeling bad again?

Thanks again

Dear Vicky,

I have to say it was a couple of years before all her dizzy spells stopped. they just gradually got less and less until she was back to normal.

Best wishes,
Amanda

Hi Vicky

First time on this site for ages

Im sorry to hear about your illness, I cant imagine what it feels like to have something that badly effects balance.
Im sure if you take it easy to begin with your'l soon be back with it.
Perhaps a lunge lesson to get your confidence back for balance ?

Are you still having lessons from Judy ?

Im still there once a week, although I did a full day mucking out there last Sunday........It was great.

Hope it all goes well

Dear Doug

Good to hear from you. I actually had a lesson this morning , a shared private with Di. Touch wood but riding made me feel a lot better this morning and last week although I still feel worried before hand but relax a bit when I'm mounted. I rode Bally this morning who was very good if not a bit lazy and last week I even manged to ride logic well and thats never an easy feat getting that mare to do what you want. Are you still riding Monty and Boss. I mounted next to Monty today and he made Bally look like a Shetland.

Chat Soon

Hi Vicky

Im realy glad your ride went well and on Beautiful Bally as well. Ive had a couple of lessons with Di, I think she's quite nice and a good instructor. Not to many confusing requests.
I still dont understand why just getting on a horse can be so...not only relaxing but just seems to make me feel somuch better. especially on a Friday night after a grotty week..
I actually hav'nt had Monty or Boss since the summer hacks but I do seem to have good few options, I think its currently up to 8 different horses.
Its quite exciting now, cos when I turn up on Friday evening I never know who I will have and I have yet to guess right.

I spent all day (Sunday) yesterday working at Suzannes, Last Sunday I knew absolutly nothing about horses or stables what goes on etc, this week I was looking aftera group including Logic, Robert, Enigma, Dunstan, and Lady C. I was like a (well supervised ) kid with a new toy, its a totaly different world. and quite facinating. The grooms / students realy work very hard, that I do know.

??????????????/
You had a shared private with Di on saturday ???? what time was it ??.

Do you have another one booked ?

Take care

You have my sympathy. 5 years ago I developed seriously bad vertigo during a schooling session on a very large horse!-my instructor got me to dismount and I promptly fell in a heap. After that it was the same each time, fine for a while and then vertigo when in 20 metre circles.... I stopped riding and was diagnosed with Meneries disease. This means I have to be careful about bending from the waist and hanging my head down and the dissiness can be caused by stress. I went back to riding and after years of hacking out just with an escort for fear of having to dismount and disrupt a ride I plucked up courage and went beach riding in Dorset, the first time with a friend and then with loads of others. Fortunately I am careful to manage the condition but I do get depressed when my balance is bad. But to give you hope I have just purchased my first horse after 17 years of waiting !!!!-I do get worried that I may have an attack out hacking so I make sure I dont go alone and so far so good, I avoid trotting in the school without stirrups (good excuse anyway) and always pick his feet out before grooming to give my balance time to recover (likewise with boots) and although the condition will leave me deaf in years to come I just try to get on with it- so please keep positive its great also for me to read the replies-I thought I was the only dizzy rider out there!!!!!:D

I suffer with Vertigo quite a lot because of problems with my ears and Jaws which I've had for a while. It runs in the family and can come on any time with no warning at all.

The longest bowt (sp?) I ever had lasted an entire week. When I get it I can't walk, turn or sit up by myself and everything I do is incredibly slow! I feel sick and the dizziness is horrible. I did used to have physio for it - but that worked by bringing on the dizziness so that my brain was supposed to work out a way to cope with it. It never worked and it made me feel soo ill in the end I stopped going to the physio.

I can totally understand how you feel - if worried about riding again then don't do it yet - as AJB said stress can often bring on an attack. Just maybe have a few little walks about the yard on your horse if you are still wary, have a friend lead you if necessary or escort you. Build up the time you ride for as you get your confidence back. If you feel ill or unstable - get off until you feel better.

Wishing you well honey

Another Dizzy Rider!

Dear All

Can I just say a big thank you to all those who have replied to the thread you have made me feel much better to know that I am not the only one. It's so weird how one day you can feel fine and the next day its all change. I agree that the 20m circles are one of the hardest things but luckily my instructer is very understanding and suffers from Vertigo herself. Going back to riding has helped me take my mind off it and lets me feel back to normal again.

Thanks again

luv vicky

Hi ya Doug

I had a private with Di on Satuday at 12 and shared it with Kate the new lady in the office. I have another booked for the same time next week. It's odd we have probably walked past each other at the yard! I agree with your words of wisdom riding is a real tonic and something I would hate to do without. Which horses do you generally ride?

hi,
i know just how u feel, I've got a back problem which I have to have physio on it. I was told that riding could make it worse but I loved it so much, I couldn't stop. When I went to my next lesson I was so nervous of my back that I got really tense and the horse took off with me anyway.
Thankfully my back is now better and i've been told that I can horse ride to my hearts content.
don't worry, it'll get better. glad to see your better!

It is a very very small world! I remember walking past you by the out door arena gate moaning that my legs were aching!!

Tell Kate that I look forward to our lesson Saturday!

Hej Vicky I knew Kate was sharing BUT what a co-insidence.......hope legs are ok now, it always suprises me just how much physical one does on a horse. Before I started riding I just presumed one just SAT there, how wrong could i have been.

It was good to hear that you had no problems with ballance that were originally conserned with.

Kate was on Kicki again on Tuesday with Tony, seems like she found the right buttons this time......

Might see you on Sat depends if im send out shopping instead........life is so hard.

Kindest
