Hi all,

Just got a new horse on Sunday and on Tuesday when I rode him (after about 30mins work) going from canter to trot, one of his back legs shot up and then he went lame on it for a few strides (got it on videocam). I walked him backwards inhand with no problems at all and also turned him in tight circles on both reins and he was fine - decided not to worry about it. Wed he was fine but then last night I rode him fine and later when he was stood in stable I backed him up and the opposite hind leg banged against the floor and then he held it up for a few seconds.

I'm confused as I believed a horse with stringhalt couldn't back up and it was more obvious when warming up/in walk & trot.

Does anyone think I should get a vet or just monitor? His previous owner said she has never seen any sign of stringhalt in him before.

(He is a 16.3hh TBxSelle Francais 5yr old). Thanks, Louise

my field share horse has mild stringhalt - you can't see it normally - unless you are super duper at seeing these things/looking out for it (personally i can't really see it - but am self professed useless at these things!)
you only really see it going down hill (goes slowly/awkwardly)
when you pick up feet (snatches them up)
and he does have real trouble backing up....

Hi,

He picks his feet up fine too but funny you should say about going downhill cos lastnight he felt a bit funny trotting down slight gradient? I'm really not sure - never known another horse with stringhalt but I really hope it isn't! If anyone else has any ideas?..............

Thanks guys :p

Well I guess byt the sound of it it may be stringhalt but just incase it is I am trying to feed low starch, low sugar and up the oil and see if that helps. There is now sign at all bar these couple of times he has snatched his leg up?
