My horse needs to be x-rayed for a possible Keratoma.
If anyone has had a horse with one of these tumours, I'd really appreciate some information on the after care treatment and recovery period.
Thanks

one of our liveries had one. she had it cut out and was on box rest with a cast for a while until the top of the hoof had grown down enough to support her without cracking further upward. she recovered fine, back into full ridden and competing work.

JR had 2 small keratomas at both toes on his front feet. One has fallen off (!!) after a yearish of being EP trimmed and the other is well on its way out. They were maybe the size of a 5p peice to begin with.

Thanks Mehitabel and Roofio, although the vet reassured me my lad would make a full recovery if the x-rays showed he did have a Keratoma, it's reassuring to have it confirmed. :)
He's currently being treated for an abcess which the vet thinks may have been caused by a Keratoma. If the abcess is still full of pus on tuesday, I've got to make an appointment for him to be x-rayed at the veterinary hospital.

my horse had one. I was really really worried about the aneasthetic operation etc etc. It all went well. I was riding on the roads after 4 months & she was winning in the show ring after 12 months. Have since sold her and she remains fit and healthy with no signs / after effects whatsoever.

Good news...
The vet is pleased with how the abcess is draining and has advised to wet poultice just once a day now for another few days and then dry poultice for a further week. If the abcess returns after the hole has been packed, then he's recommended my lad have x-rays to determine whether the abcesses are being caused by a keratoma.
So, fingers crossed everything will turn out fine.:)
