when i had my 2 shetland mares the vet told me to keep checking their teet area and breasts and was told if they're empty its fine. sorry i dont know the technical words.
ive had this mare (another mare) about 2 months now and today i checked her and she has 2 hard ball shape things in one of her breast sacks, (yes she is a mare:rolleyes:)
what is this?
should i be worried?
she looks and is acting the picture of health otherwise.

A mare has an udder, in two halves (or sides). :)
The lumps you describe should be checked out by a vet, or at least by someone with knowledge of these things, ie a competent person with experience of mares and breeding.
It may very much depend on her age and her breeding history/future breeding as to whether it may be a serious issue, perhaps requiring treatment, or may be something benign which she can live happily with, without treatment.
They may just be fatty tissue, but...........
If there is heat in the area, along with perhaps a discharge from the teat on that side, it may be mastitis..........maybe brought on by the attention of flies, particularly if she hasn't been lactating.
Mastitis is a very painful condition and will need urgent treatment, as failure to treat it will probably render the mare severely compromised, if not useless, as a breeding animal.
Untreated, mastitis may develop into severe fever and septicaemia, and may be fatal!
I'm concerned that you describe the lumps as"ball" shaped.........it may not be as 'simple' as mastitis.
If you're not sure, you should consult a good vet, sooner rather than later.

Like what angeus said, best thing would be to get a vet out. My friend's old mare has a round lump in her near side udder, and as she is a grey, the diagnosis was what we thought it would be:(

shes a 9yo, the lumps are in her left (as you look at her) udder, im concerned as ive never felt anything like this before, theres no heat but they are hard. no discharge or any external signs. and i havent seen her season in the 2 months ive had her.
she's never foaled, shes shetland, or shetland cross not entirely sure.
