hey folks :D

I have another prelim coming up soon, but i am also thinking of hogging Mr Jasper's mane off , because : ( 1. he wont let me pull it and it looks a mess and 2. it is now so thick and long it must take me 3/4rs of an hour to combe the bloody thing lol :p and it wont stay on the right side )

so do you prefer to see dressage horses with a hogged main or all neatly plaited up ? and what do you think the judges will prefer ?

i would add a pole but cant work out how to add one :(

Since he's a cob type I would go with the full hog. I think a hogged mane looks smart and in any case on a cob it looks "correct" ... The judges won't mind either way I'm sure.

i havent seen pics of him but if he is a cob then hog him (as long as he is also heeled and tail pulled). pulled manes on cobs arent "correct"

if he is a finer type leave him plaited

U cant hog jasper?!?!? The shame!!

Plaits look soooo much nicer!! Jez will not tollerate pulling either so I use a thinning rake and a solo comb, pain/stress free for both of us :D

if i pull it with a solo comb - how does it thin the main - coz its uba thick atm and all falls on the wrong side - tried plaiting it over and the minute i take plait out, just falls back on to the wrong side again

Noooooo, don't hog him! I'd stick with plaiting for the stressage and live with the two-sided look the rest of the time.

If its really think u need to get a rake. They are great for thinning out thick manes and its really quick. You start by combing mane onto wrong side and just work your way down top to bottom until mane is of desired thickness/thinnes. Then use solo to shorten. Trick with solo it to do just a few hairs at a time, otherwise you will get the choppy effect. Let me see if I can find picture of a rake....

OK got one - there are loads around but this looks like the one I use. Its fantastic!

Don't you dare hog him! Shame on you for considering it....:D

Definatley plait. I don't pull Gord's as its quite thin, instead I trim the underside & feather it lots. You can't tell & his mane grows so quickly it wouldn't matter if it bodged.

thanks for help guys - hill try and thin , ;) but if it all goes pear shaped may have to hog :o x x

My lad is also an ISH, and has the same kind of teeny-tiny forelock as in that first pic!! :p

Would have to say plait - he looks lovely in second pic... I am useless at plaiting and am hoping to get away a with neatly pulled mane for local rc stuff (preferable to the golf balls I end up with when I plait I think! :o)

To buck the trend, so to speak, how about letting it grow long, and doing a running plait for dressage. I am too lazy to keep on top of my boy's monster mane, and don't show, so have left it for the last year - it is down to the bottom of his neck now! However I get lots of complaints about it, and people chasing me about with pulling combs!:o I think it looks nice though - sort of barbie horse meets overgrown mountain and moorland..... and 2 mins to brush through with loads of mane and tail conditioner!

Definately thinning comb and plait. If you find 'bobbles' hard to acheive, (sewing is easiest), try folding and taping them with electrical tape for a real dressage queen look :D

i'm not sure what breed Soda is but i think he really suits his mane hogged and i think Jasper would too. he's a well set ISH so i dont think he would look silly with it hogged - no idea what dressage judges prefer though!! ive seen all sorts doing dressage so i dont see why it would hold you back!!

if youve got an incling to so it then it will grow back, if you only considered it because it cant be pulled then i'd say solo comb/rake

I say the mane stays!

My boy hates having his mane pulled to the point of trampling you and he really isn't the type to do that. My old pony was the same but he took more to snapping headcollars (see a pattern of mad chestnuts here?) I did have a solocomb at one point but it had a bit of an accident when I tried to open a bale of straw with it:rolleyes: and the head snapped of and I don't fancy forking out for another.

I used to pick pieces and back comb as if I was going to pull it then chop upwards at the piece of hair with scissors as near to the root as possible, takes a bit of hand co-ordination but works.

I could get away with this with my pony but my horse is still adamant that I'm going to pull it out as soon as I start to backcomb so that is out of the question. He now gets a regular hair trim always chopping upwards which helps it look more natural and paying atention to the underneathlayer being chopped alot shorter than the rest of the mane helps with the thinning scinareo, you can barely tell when au naturel and once it's in plaits it's impossible to tell.

i think i thinnned it to much underneath and now when i plait it there will be bits sticking out all over the shop :( ARRRRGGGHHHHHHHH !

I say hog and grow back as a brush mane alla Libby ;)

Smart & easy ... This time of year it grows so fast I have to cut it almost every week // so it's flopping a bit (or threatening to!) because Libby's turned away at the mo and doesn't need a perfect mane.

Don't hog the gorgeous Jasper, it won't suit his type at all !! Please don't spoil his looks, please pretty please ?!?!?!

It doesn't matter if the mane lies to "the wrong" side - if you plait him up it'll look fab. And when you're not stressaging you can just let him have it whichever way it naturally goes.

Please please please don't hog him. I love looking at Jasper pics but I really can't bear the thought of him looking like a cob or a criollo.
I love those types, don't get me wrong, but he isn't a cob and he isn't a criollo.... it'd be like me (ueber white skin, freckles and ginger hair) with an affro hairdo. It would just look weird.

You won't be able to live with yourself if you hog him.... we'll make sure of it ;)

I'm sure it's not as bad as you make it sound.
PICTURES would be good so we can tell you what we think and give you advice :D:D

You know we need our Jasper picture fix so you might as well show us what you've done to the poor boy's mane :D:D:D:p:p

Jez's mane goes one side, bottom half to the right top half to the left. I tried making it stay over but it wont have it, he's got a whorl on his nick which kicks it over. But I manage to plait all on the right with no probs - will attach a pic of his wonky mane (any excuse!)
