So I had a little jump around and put it onto a vid for you all to look at...

Feel free to critique...I wont sulk if its negative. :p

Ive popped my stirrups up for jumping but find that this affects my position especially brings my legs forward. Is this normal? Is my position with the stirrups ok??

I would say your doing really well, you should be proud of yourselves.

The only thing I would comment/critique on is that maybe give slightly more with your hands but maybe I'm wrong I don;t know I'm no expert.

But keep it up I love the video and think your doing wonderfully :)

Love the sound track as well :p

My main critique would be around your hands - you look like you need to give more as it looks like you are catching him a little when you're jumping. If he's anything like C he has a very low head carriage which only gets lower when he jumps so when I'm coming into a jump I pick him up a little just before by raising my hands and then I really give with my hands over the jump but don't really fold.

Your legs do look like they are coming forward - you need to get your heel down more and your legs underneath you. Try doing up-up downs as I call them before jumping and w/t/c round in your light seat to get your legs in the right position.

My goodness, I've been very negative haven't I :o - just to add, although I know that these are the things that you need to do, I can't do half of them myself!:p

Yes totally agree with the hands need to be thrown more up his neck...

I was trying to sit back and half halt him before the jumps because he tends to tank at them. Then I was trying to remember to sit back again after the jump. So I forgot about giving with my hands...:o

Then I remembered and went softer with my hands so that the reins go though if he wants them too. He tends to have a high head carriage when jumping as he gets excited. :D

You trot round and stand for to then sit for one, then try standing for 3 and sitting for one - i really gets your heels down an helps with balance.

I'm like you - I know what I'm doing wrong but when I'm heading towards a jump the only thing going through my mind is "please don't fall off, please don't fall off" - so all the hands up, heels down stuff goes right out my head!

No critique from me as Im still learning :o!

Very nice video of you both. Captain looks really comfortable to ride and reminds me of the lovely Gromit that I used to ride who gave me confidence as it was like riding in an armchair!

Sadly Sancho, Captain is extremely uncomfortable to ride. I still have sore inner legs and a bruised bum from Sunday.:o

I thought cobs were notoriuosly comfy.

I think you both look great! It is the first vid I have seen of you both, and first jumping pics, I think! I don't think you are hindering him unduly with your hands given the height of the jumps - more important to give as they get a bit bigger. he looks lovely and keen, and you ride him very calmly. :)

I agree with the above, you look good and confident, but agree that your hands need to give a little more over the fences, but also, you could be slightly softer with your hands on the approach. Not so he has any more head, but so that your not leaning on him, and pulling on him. You tend to ride round in between fence leaning also, try and avoid this. Also, when you sit back up from jumping position, don't jerk back on his mouth - once you stop leaning and give with you hands, when you sit back up there will naturally not be a jerk back. Well done though :-) x

We havent really done a lot of jumping for 2 yrs. I lost my confidence which in turn meant Captain lost his confidence. He didnt really do anything scary just tended to tank over the jump quicker to keep me safe. Which in turn scared me. :o Then we had lessons with our Centred Riding Instructor for about 9 months and things have improved from there really.

Once I remembered to give more with my hands I was happier. Then I forgot again. :o I was thinking about jumping without reins last night. I shall see how I feel next time I go up to the field.

First well done! Now if I talk crap just ignore me :D But I agree with the others, you really need to give more with your hands, not just over the jumps but also on your approach. It looks like you are tense through your arms and upper body when approaching some of the jumps, so you look to be holding him back a bit too much and them kicking him on... if you get what I mean? But I can understand why you do this if he tanks you over them! Mine was like that and it could be a bit un-nerving at times to say the least!!

Also your leg comes forward when doing some of the jumps, which will put you in an insecure position and make you have to work much harder, so try and keep them under you more (though sometimes saddles don't help in this matter!). Captain certainly does look like he enjoys his jumping :) Once you both get to be more confident and relax a bit more I'm sure there will be no stopping you.

Just give him the rein and grab a bit of that massive mane - that's what I do!:p

When you go into the jump have your hands up and forward but don't tip - just think "give", sit up straight, shoulders back and just by giving with your hands you'll find you fold ever so slightly without over bending.

You're jumping better than I ever could!

Captain sometimes does what Sammy sometimes does, a little pause and a look at the fence before take off! Threw me for six before I learnt to look out for it!

Wow that's a great video, my critique from what i know would be this...

On the lead upto a jump try to take more of a forward seat, this will help you to gather impulsion as he looked slightly hesitant over some but it will also make you naturally bring your hands forward. As you feel him come up give him a big bear hug round his neck. That's how i learnt to give with my hands, maybe got right to the extreme and push them really far forward then bring them back! That's what i found helps. :)

Good luck!

ETA: just re-watched it and i would say he does keep a nice steady pace into a jump, just sometimes it seems he needs a bit more impulsion over the jump. May be because i'm used to having to lean so far back my head touches Nimby's bum as he runs as fast as he can toward a jump then jumps it 2ft higher than needed ;)

I do tend to hold him back. Confidence thing. Im feel as if he is tanking. Maybe he isnt. :o With more practise maybe the speed wont seem to fast...

You both looked a lot better towards the end when you were allowing him to go forward more.

The earlier ones looks what I call 'old style' jumping, hold till three strides out and launch .... it is much easier to concentrate on constant canter rythm which will get rid of the ...pause..leap.... and encourage you to flow forward with him a bit more.

EML - My wise OH told me to stop worrying about Captain, let him do the work and for me to concentrate on my balance. Funny how wise these non horsey OH's are isnt it. :D

I'm really impressed. You look great and I love the way you sit so still over the jump. Despite my years of riding I have absolutely NO confidence with jumping and just cannot get to grips with it. I end up throwing myself up the horses neck in some sort of weird attempt to jump it for him! It's always been a big regret of mine that I can't conquer it - dressage and other flat work I'm fine with but jumping? No. Yet it's the one area of riding I'm most fascinated with - prob cos I can't do it! I'd be chuffed to bits if I had a vid of me jumping like that! :)
