got out new v tall cob, had been told she was fine to ride, was queuing outside the arena for lesson and she wouldn't stand still at all, weaving all over the place (most of the horses would just stand). anyway she ended up standing on my toe because despite me holding her at arms length her gangling legs were much longer than my arms. so i stood there screaming, the toe isn't broken but was really sore and i just cried my eyes out from the shock, in front of everyone in my group and the teenage riders coming out of the school. then i still got on the wretched horse but she was quite forward going and after half a circuit of the school i was in tears again - so i managed to get another much quieter horse and actually had quite a good lesson after.

not sure i dare show my face again, not only am i known as the person who came off a horse badly jumping tiny jump, i am now known as the person who booed like a baby just because a horse trod on my toe. the shame!

Believe me if Moss steps on my toe I either bawl or swear very fluently, depending on my mood to start with. You probably cried in your lesson as you were emotionally wound up anyway and coping with a sore foot. All other things beiong equal you probably would not have been quite so wound up.
Keep smiling

Hey sarahh - don't worry about it.

We all started out sometime, and we all have some pretty cringeworthy stories that we could tell.

I doubt anyone is really thinking of you in the light that you imagine. Promise.

Sarahh, I think Mossy's hit it right when she says that you were probably wound up about several things. And getting stepped on can hurt a lot! I was stepped on by a ClydeX while wearing thin rubber boots. Youch! Turned my toes black and blue. (When I told my instructor about it, she said "good"! Excuse me?
She made me feel a real twit for having let it happen. Some people!!!)

Chin up.

In that case I would have alsobeen know as the cry baby at my old riding school as I bawled my eyes out after falling off trotting down a bank. Mind you I hit my head and shoulder on the floor and then the horse trod on me with all four feet. We had recently lost our very faithful dog Holly on the Friday and this happened on the Sunday so yes I was emotional too.

Maybe we should have a 'When did you bawl your eyes out and why' thread I bet there would be a few people
;)

Well toes are so extremely sensitive aren't they? Riding schools and their culture aren't the easiest places to show your feelings in either. For those of us who do I'm sure we all end up cringing. I might not be that new to riding any more ('though almost really) yet Kerry can still catch me unawares - I got my foot stood on (again - first time for absolutely ages) two weeks ago. No one saw and I didn't yelp (this time) but still felt SO silly to the extent that that was worse than the pain - and it hurt a lot!!!

What is it about us that creates that "silly" feeling so readily?? If it had been one of the cats I wouldn't have felt silly at all - yes I know they aren't half a ton but it's the principle really.

Just ignore anyone you feel "makes" you feel silly and try to enjoy yourself.

You poor thing. That hurts like crazy! Don't be embarrassed. It's happened to most of us.

I've had so many embarassing moments I could present my own "you've been framed" show just showing my own clips.

If you want to talk about embarrasing riding school moments, how about......

I was doing an "asset" course, it's a basic horse care course and there is a practical riding exam. You need to be able to walk, trot, canter and to be able to mount properly.

I took the horse to the centre of the arena, forgot to check my girth and ended up underneath the horse in a heap on the arena floor. Basically, I failed before I even GOT ON THE HORSE!!!!

Oh the shame!!!!LOL

We all do stupid things so don't worry, the rest of us are too busy trying to cover up our own mistakes to laugh at you

:D

Getting stepped on can hurt A LOT- especially by a big horse- so don't be embarrassed! Don't worry, you get used to it after a while;)

one of my friends saddled up the horse she was assigned that day, and came out to wait outside the arena, and to mount, only to realize that maybe using a girth to keep the saddle upright would be a good idea.

People usually get either aggresive or they cry with horses... and I am sooo bad at crying! I've just done this riding course and I just cried and cried on the last day.

I have a mental block with jumping, because of a compicated accident, with me jumping a horse that had damaged nerves etc. in his back that were unknown at the time. I can't to begin to imagine the amount of pain he was in. He threw me off, breaking my elbow. I've never been confident around jumps ever again!

Anyway (!), this instructor was making me jump, just small jumps, but I was just so scared, which made poor old Razz scared and we looked like idiots. All I could do was cry, but the instructor was so patient. She had people running along side with me and jumping over the jumps!

There is nothing wrong with crying!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least you didn't have a pair of sandals on ! ( I did, taught me a painful lesson). Cheer up. we all do it, and live to laugh at the memory. Happy New Year. L

Hi Sarah,
Mossy and Miriam are right when they said you were probably wound up about something else, or more likely a whole bunch of things at the time and the big clumsy clod on your foot was just the LAST STRAW!!! :D Don’t worry, we all have these out-of-control emotional moments. Mine happened many years ago in a university chemistry class -- when the Prof. called on me to answer a question nothing came out but tears, snorts, and hysterical sobs.
I knew the answer but my beloved boyfriend had just dumped me and my Dad was in the hospital, I hadn’t slept in days, and I was PMS ing, etc. etc. etc. Now when I look back on it it’s hilarious – likely much worse for the Prof. than it was for me. :D Don’t be afraid to go back, hold your head up and carry on, better than ever. You don't even owe anybody an explanation if you don't want. :p

Cheers,
Debutante

Sarahh,

Reading the initial message, just wanted to say that actually getting on that very tall horse when you've just badly injured your foot, (and you've got an audience) is no mean achievement in itself and merits some congratulation !
