Hello and welcome!!!
It does depend on what type you want. skull or clasical. I think mine was about £40 for your typical classical hat, fully up to date and up to all British and European standards (BSEN and PAS). You can of course get the really light weight ones with all the latest technology and venting for over £100!

Also, try and get a junior one! They are exactly the same but minus the tax!! Just make sure it is fitted properly.
Don't know about mushroom head but for good protection they should be about an inch thick!

I have a Jockey Skull Cap at the moment but I really hate it, and will get one like this http://www.robinsons-uk.com/robcl/images/Products/20004.jpg when I start riding Dolly. It's £38.95 and called a Euro Hat. It conforms to safety standard BSEN1384

Here's a link to the kind of helmet I've got:
http://www.statelinetack.com/scripts/product.asp?style=EI3-651504
It probably does make me look like I have a mushroom head - but what the heck, while I'm wearing it I don't have to look at it, do I?:D
I like the venting - very cool and comfy!

Peace, I have that one too. :) I like it a lot, and when I ride in summer, I can occasionally take the pads out and wash the sweat out of them. Not something you can usually do with a velvet...and in the South of the US, washability is a major plus. And when I put my velvet helmet cover over it, nobody can tell the difference.

I don't know about other hats, but teh Charles Owen mould to your head for extra protection and comfort so don't let others ride in your hat.

HI!
A good place to get riding hats (and other riding equipment) is www.ebay.co.uk most of the stuff is second hand but a good part of it is brand new, i got my little sister a brand new charles owen hat for £11! Although you do have to be careful and read the sellers feedback profile coz you can get some dodgy people . Anyways, happy hat hunting!

I don't know whether I'd get a hat online, just to be sure it's got no damage and fits properly.

A need some advice from experienced riders on this one (Galadriel, maybe you can advise me on this one). I bought my riding skull - Charles Owen - around 10 years ago, when I started to ride in Britain. At the time, it was the best and safest, complying with all the safety stardard tests. Since then, riding gear technology has improved a great deal, I realise just by brousing the catalogues.
Well, the point is, with sweating, wear and tear, my skull on the inside is looking tatty; the foam around the edge is drying up and getting unglued, the black silk lining turned burgundish colour. Do I need another hat/skull, or is it still ok? Another question is, my head is odd size, skulls and hats are made in round and not half measures (cm); I'll explain, my head is 55,5cm, not 55cm or 56cm, so, what size should I purchase? 55cm might be too tight and 56cm too wide?!

What I have read is that you should replace your helmet every 4 years; the foam/etc forming the padding--what you can't see from outside--deteriorates over time. I've never really gone that long without a fall ;) and so have replaced mine a little more often.
If you have a head that is hard to fit, you might well be better off with the kind of helmet PEace & I have (see the link above). I have a head just between a 6 3/4 and 6 7/8 (teensy tiny). The helmets like that one come with several different types of padding, and you can mix & match until it fits just right.
Riding in a too-tight helmet would be awful, I think--trying to concentrate and ride well with that kind of a distraction? Ouch! If you can't get an adjustable helmet, then you might want to get the slightly larger helmet and see if you can pad it somehow. To fit properly, a helmet should be just tight enough to not slide off when you tilt your head. That way it will not slide around as you're wearing it, on the ground or riding. It should not be tighter than that.
Soft foam around the side is very convenient. I find that as it gets wet (sweat), foam can compress a little. My helmet is adjusted a little on the snug side, but as I ride, as I wear it, it never gets too loose. The foam is soft enough that the snugnes doesn't bother me.
