I find I don't forget mentally - the problem is trying to get my muscles to do what I want them to! That's really frustrating. I KNOW what I'm supposed to do, I just can't always get my body to actually DO it. Argh.

you'll probably just have to start from the beginning to refresh your memory. then work your way up to where you were when you stopped. it'll come back! dont worry, just have fun riding again!

a refresher lesson or two may be in order, but, our muscles don't always have the same memory as our brain ;) so they may take a little longer to get reacclimated.

Often it also depends on the level you reached and the amount of practice you were doing before the break. If you were still finidng everything very new you might find that there are some things which won't come naturally, but a few lessons should sort that out. It will also depend on how confident you feel in and around the horses once you start back - have faith in yourself and enjoy it. Don't look at the past year as wasted - just look at it as an opportunity that you have had to realise how important your riding has been to you and use this feeling to give yourself more resolve to improve further. I'm sure you'll be fine. :)

I had to have an enforced break when I went to University because I couldn't take my horse with me and couldn't afford lessons. Whilst at the time I too had worries like you they soon disappeared and I appreciate my riding time so much more now for having had the break.

Mystic, I hadn't ridden for 31 (yes, thirty one) years when I got back on board just under two years ago. I had a few private lessons (VERY PRIVATE) with an instructor who just let me wander about at walk for the first few lessons until I found my seat/legs again, but what was interesting was that, after I relaxed, how quickly the basics came back again. What was more difficult was that I had never been properly taught (like I am now) and I had some dreadful habits to unlearn!

one never forgets how to ride a bicycle. You wont forget..you'll just be rusty...after a short time you will pick up from where you left off!
