I asked the riding school owner what she meant by withy (and if I had heard her correctly). Apparently, I had heard her correctly and withy in this case meant quick or sharp. A cob which throws its head around and is too quick for comfort.
Have a feeling that withy little Tara is not going to be at that riding school for much longer!

Ooooo Es, wicked you!
Well, Tara cob must be very different from the last cob I rode at the school - he just WOULD NOT GO! Rosco was only five years old but was not even as lively and willing as the 23 year old I used to share!
Now, my cob.... he's a different matter. He's perfect..... (OK, a little tongue in cheek - but sometimes it does make you appreciate your own dear horse when you ride another!)

Round here withy is a thin whippy rod cut from coppiced willow. Used for weaving baskets or fencing. Interesting how the word has evolved to mean something else in another area.
