Heather,

Out of interest, would you recomend a Pelham for Flynn.

He has never been in one. We bitted in our training KK which he likes and still does ( as much as I can read his behaviour)

He liked the rubber mullen mouth loose ring we also used when first backing, but we changed to a Cyprium Full Cheek french link to help in early days with steering.

He still also likes this bit, but Melissa is getting such good results with Spot in this, I am lothe to take it back.

We have a Myler type bit at present which has had really good results we felt we could keep him in the bridle better and he accepted it well.

Do we keep with this, or would you say give the Pelham a go to see if he thinks Wow! Now this is acceptable. Or Now way!

I went to a demo Sunday with a local well respected dressage rider, Tabitha Perry. It was on bringing on the novice horse.

Who I thought was superb, she showed how all her set ideas she had, had to be changed as her horses said I dont like this. She had to accept horses are all different and it is what works for them and gets results is the best way.
She had one who went superb in a Double against all she had beleived in before. The horse was less tense and worked much more relaxed. She had previously gone through all, even the Pelham.

So I thought well Do I stop having all my pre-conceived ideas, as Tabitha amitted she had to do! and open my mind as I bring on Flynn further., that some other bits might be better.

Also what do you think to the Kimblewick as it is from the Pelham group of bits?? out of interest?

Sorry, not Heather, but you did say "& others..." :)

Personally, if I wasn't happy with the way my horse was going in a particular bit, the first change I'd make these days would be to a hard rubber Pelham: however I wouldn't change just for the sake of it if my horse really was going happily in a snaffle, nor would I assume that the Pelham is the answer for every single horse on the planet.

Seconded Ros-

If it ain't broke, don't mend it!! If Flynn is happy and relaxed in his jaw in the snaffle, leave well alone, Susan, woudlbe my advice. Nice to hear about Tabitha Perry- what a refreshing change to hear that she listens to her horses and acts on what she finds!
