Was just wondering what tb crosses make good competition horses (with the mare as the tb)? Or what tb cross is sought after?

And what do you think of an andalusian x tb as a competition horse?

Thanks! :D

tb x warmblood are always going to be athletic and useful

crossing with welsh D usually makes a super jumper

you cant really go wrong with tb crosses, as long as both are viable to be bred from.

How long is a piece of string....??

Shire x TB's can be a good cross, so can TB x Welsh...........

Depends on what 'type' of horse you want - I like the TB x Shire myself, as I like a middleweight hunter type....

TB x Welsh make very good athletic types, good at eventing....

I've heard that TB x Cleveland Bays make excellent competition horses and infact many of them are bred for that purpose. Only know this cos I've got one myself, but I only intend to happy hack him anyway :p

Full TB or 7/8ths TB is the traditional stamp for an event horse, although with the loss of long-format, the heavier types are now doing as well. The 1/8ths would often be irish draught, connie, welsh D, cleveland bay.

As for 1/2 thoroughbreds... my personal favourite mixes would be TBxWelsh D (often completely loopy, but talented jumpers with lovely movement to rival a WB) and TBxConnie (again tend to make talented jumpers, without breeding something too heavy)

And as regards andalusianxtb - might well be perfectly nice, but not sure what the breeder would be trying to achieve?

Thank you everyone.

The breeder is someone I know, who is contemplating breeding a competition horse (probably along the lines of an eventer) with his tb mare. He has a friend with an andalusian stallion, so hence the andalusian x tb. His mare throws lovely foals.

I like the sound of Welsh D x tb - I will tell him what I have found out ;D

Someone at our yard put her PRE stallion to her TB mare - it's a yearling now and looks nice but I'm not experienced enough to look at a yearling and tell how it will turn out.

It's a cross you would see more in Spain so I googled caballo anglo hispano and found a couple of pictures.

Alot of the ones on Spanish sites had arab in the mix as you do get alot of PRE x Arab crosses. (hispano arabe).

I breed the TB x Friesians and have so far found them to be very good event/dressage horses, obviously depends on the mare and stallion and wether thier conformation compliments each other. I would have thought the andi x tb would be similar to the friesian cross but smaller and with less bone, just make sure at least one of them has a good backend as spanish horses tend to have quite a high tail carriage, sickle hocks and weak quarters - not the end of the world but alot of tb's have poor backends too so look at what the mare has thrown previously and what conformational traits she throws - also do the same with the stallion or you could end up with a flashy looking horse with not much behind it - which is not what you want for jumping!
If you get it right you should end up with something that looks like a smaller warmblood but that is able to be much lighter on the forehand - thanks to the spanish horse, which is ideal for jumping.
If you look at my stallion Wessels page to see what the tb x's look like it will give you a vague idea - friesians are after all just a much chunkier version of the spanish horse - they have the same, or should have, conformation/gait as a baroque spanish, we have one yearling xbred on the for sale page which will show you an older one!

Oh you have some gorgeous horses! I love Orla, she is stunning - have never seen tb x friesian - they are beautiful! I am a huge fan of arabo friesians as well.

I will definitly be showing my friend some pics of the friesian x tb!

-

tb x Id also seem to be a very popular cross - i have seen several on NR.

my friend is a huge advocate of TBxwelsh D, she did her damndest to stop me from buying a pure bred D by extoling the virtues of one crossed with a TB. not a fan of IDxTB, been there, got the T-shirt and won't ever buy another one!

TB xID is the most well known, but Tb x warmbloods are also good for build, and docility...Also TBxArabs are good for endurance type sports...I guess it depends on what discipline you want to enter....TBx Shire or cob is good for hunting and XC... And my Friesian x TB has great dressage potential!

OOOOH - YAY! I have a friesian x TB!!! Shes about 11 months old in this pic - http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i228/ashlea-maria/beautifulresized.jpg
Shes got such high and extravigant leg actions, especially in trot that I have to teach her dressage!!!
She trots on the spot with her head in, and her tail stuck up in the air, yet she is so gently and very very willing! Love her!

I'd love to breed from my arab mare so much (cos she's beautiful :)) but I know if I did I'd definitely not go for an arab stallion (not a huge fan of pure bred arabs at the mo). Wonder what an arab x fresian or an arab x andalusian would look like?

Changing breed somewhat but I love talking about arab crosses:

Arabo fresians are gorgeous and are becoming very popular in carriage driving. I started a thread about them awhile ago - it is somewhere under "breeds" topic. Also Hispano arabs are stunning as well, really beautiful. These two crosses are becoming better known. I have seen a few hispano arabs on horsemart recently.

I have a purebred arab myself and if she was young enough I would definitly go purebred, as her bloodlines are rare and I love purebreds. However in March of this year I bought a Quarab (Quarter horse x arab) and am highly impressed with her scope and ability. She is more arab than QH but I think she will become more QH as she grows older - I would definitly recommend the breed. I wonder what Tb x QH would be like? I would think it would make a nice cross.

The grey is apparently "a famous 3/4 friesian, 1/4 arab"....actually found it on another thread! Havent seen it before, but looks like a "white" friesian to me....still gorgeous though....I guess the foals would differ depending on the ratio of friesian:arab in its blood, and also what it inherits from each parent ....the dark colt os also arebo fresian

make sure you choose the correct conformation to compliment your mare!

I would be a little scared to put my arab (if small) into foal with a baroque friesian stallion if it were her first foal...id maybe try doing so if it were her 2nd or 3rd....on the other hand, I would happily breed an arab stallion to a friesain mare 1st time...it would be slightly smaller than any other full siblings though - just the way it goes!
Some people might not see a problem with breeding a small mare with a large stallion first time round (or ever), but Id be careful with it incase there were any complications...
(I dont really know much about breeding though)
