Hello.

I am having MORE issues with that awful woman who had hit my horse in the head. I havent actually seen her since that incident, we must be like passing ships in seeing our horses. Fine by me!
Well, I starting to wonder if she has been down AT ALL??

We had a little rain and some chillier temperatures here earlier this week. I put a warmer cover on Cheeky at night and changed it to a lighter summer cotton sheet during the day.
The weather has been glorious, especially today and yesterday (30 degrees today!)
I have been to check Cheeky's water and stuff just now, and I looked over the back paddocks.
The madwomans ponies [B]STILL HAVE THEIR HEAVY WINTER COVERS ON!
I was astounded! SURELY they must be wilting under those rugs?
I bet they dont even have water....but I dont want to go and take off their covers, in case she feels at liberty to come and do Cheeky's (in other words touch my horse when I am not there)
Sorry about the rant, but isnt this horrible??

maybe you could drop an anonymous note for her...

i like the note idea but i was going to say either tell a nother boarder and ask them to have a word with her or the barn owner maybe willing to have a word with her aaswell !
i like the anomonous note idea though. thats how i would go about it ! i am a shy person and hate talking to people about things that i may think is wrong or sometimes talking in general !

Tell the owners of the stable that the woman has them rugs on her horses, they shouldn't be even wearing rugs in that type of temperature so they must be really hot. Drop a note and see the owners, don't touch her horses either or she might do something back. Also its not right to have to be in a position where your scared that a person might hurt your horse, you must tell someone before it gets out of hand like I replyed on your other post she is "bullying" you in a way.

I would skip the note thing. Just tell the owner's of the stable the rugs are still on. Frankly even with self-board one would hope that the stable owners would somehow keep an eye on all of the horses' wellbeing. They stable owners could simply call the negligent boarders and remind them that "the temps in your area have risen and the rugs are still on. Will they come by and take them off themselves or would they like stable management to do it for a fee?"

Unfortunately its not like a stable or barn situation. Its a self care grazing situation. The owner of the property basically just lives in his house and rents out his land to us. He DOES check all the fencing and water supplies are on etc and looks at the horses to see if they are ok on his way in and out each day, but apart from that, he leaves it up to us to care for our horses. This is the way it usually is in New Zealand.
It is entirely up to the woman to come and look after her ponies properly! Although on Friday, she DID change their sheets to summer ones (finally!)

Hey Cochise - are you able to get over there without being seen? If so I'd go over and take the damn covers off - I know what you mean tho' I see lots of horses with their covers on still and I don't mean summer ones. Otherwise you're going to have to bite the bullet and either talk\phone\leave a note or ask the local animal welfare agency to take a look.

For you folk in the UK\US, our horses in NZ tend to live out 24x7 and although we may rent the paddocks its not a livery or barn situation like you guys have.

In addition to that the UV rays in NZ are amongst the highest in the world - the hole in the ozone layer means burn times here are part of the weather reports and are around 10mins in summer.

So horses are frequently rugged all year around to protect them from the sun in summer - sunscreen and nose protectors are a must for light coloured horses! However, most owners have a whole wardrobe of covers including summer sheets that protect and reflect sunlight (although on first glance you think gosh why is that horse rugged up in this weather?) Some however are clearly still in canvas or worse canvas, wool lined winter rugs.

Thank you Viv, you explained that so well!!

I was tempted to go over and take the ponies covers off, IF they would let me near them! They are the hardest damn ponies to catch!! And I am not in the mood to spend an hour trying to take off others peoples horses covers when they SHOULD be doing it themselves!

Cheeky absolutely HAS to wear a summer sheet in the hot weather. He has pink skin over his back and sensitive areas (underneath) and as you can imagine with these strong UV rays here they burn very easily in sensitive places!

I tell you what Cochise, I've had our (shared grazing) horses lining up to get their covers off on a hot day :) Once one is naked, they're all eager to be caught :D
