Wow! Unusual! Can you explain more about silver please!?

Yep :D

Silver dapple is a dilute gene that only affects black pigment. It dilutes black body colour to a dark chocolatey colour and black manes and tails to that silvery grey colour.

It has no effect on red pigment.

So a black horse with silver will have a chocolate body and silvery white mane and tail.

A bay with silver will have normal red body colour, dark chocolate legs and light mane and tail.

A chestnut with silver won't look any different to any other chestnut.

It was believed that there was no silver in Welsh until fairly recently; the first Welsh tested positive was a US pony.

Since then three UK bred ponies tested positive, Bob being one of them.

Bob got silver from his sire, who is chestnut - so the silver wasn't recognised because it was hidden. It's likely that there are silver bays in that line of breeding who have been misidentified as flaxen chestnut (silver bay can look an awful lot like flaxen chestnut), along with silvers hidden by grey and silvers hidden in chestnut breeding.

There are also probably more misidentified when registered (Bob was registered as 'dark palomino/dun' - in fact he has no dun gene and no cream gene so can't be either of those colours); that, coupled with the fact that I imagine the WPCS would have a hissy fit if someone tried to register a pony as silver dapple, means they have no ponies registered as such.

It's been recognised in some other breeds for longer, most commonly Kentucky Mountain horses and Rocky Mountain horses, where it's usually known as taffy or chocolate.

He's not quite black - his winter coat you can see there is more of a milk chocolate colour.

But his summer coat is darker - think plain chocolate!

As near to black with silver mane and tail as you'll get.... :D

Dunalino is basically a horse that is both palomino and carries dun. So chestnut + cream (makes it palomino) + dun (makes it dunalino) :)

Troy, was born a palomino, but has got darker as hes got older.

No, he's still palomino. Some pallies do darken with age - it's called sooty palomino. May be something similar to what causes liver chestnuts to darken too.

One of the Nebo stallions (can't remember which one right now :o ) was sooty palomino. He was noted as being 'palomino later turned chestnut' Which of course cannot happen - once a palomino, always a palomino! Sooty palomino is also known as chocolate palomino in some breeds.

Both born chesnut in May and developed the 'tell tale goggles' around their eyes saying they were destined to be grey.

They shed their baby coats and end up like this, bearing in mind these were taking in September.

http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p171/horsey_bucket/2008_0912spetember0005.jpg

It is now December and they don't seem to be getting any greyer, the first, if anything has gone oranger. Now both mothers are grey, same father for both the foals who is also grey but carries the roan gene. They do not look roan to me as they are so light on the face.

chev
6th Dec 2008, 10:58 AM
They're going grey. Remember grey doesn't just add white to begin with - it also adds dark pigment. So a foal often darkens in the early stages of grey, and only starts to lighten later on. :)

She's a gelderlander X !"$£"%("* (your guess is as good as ours!) She has an appalling start and we've guessed all her history through her travelling routes and her behaviour.

The horse in the background was an amazing appaloosa horse but unfortunatly died of a freak disease (black foot or something???) that only effects like a 1 in million horses or something ridiculous. He was going to be a great eventer/sj horse...

She looks like a maximum sabino.

Yeh, she's not technically or a registered cremello or anything. I just say it to decribe her as a pink skinned/white horse. The pigment happens to go over her eyes so if she didn't happen to have that change in pigment she would be like a cremello as she would have got the red eyes i think. Oh well, she's just a quirky girl! hehe
