Today I was told I over-rise in rising trot. I've found I only over-rise when I'm riding my usual mount Angus. His trot is terribly Bumby and at fist very hard to rise to. I'm very used to it by now and it feels normal. Is it because of the bumbyness I over-rise? I rode a lil pony this Arvo and my rising was fine.....I'm a bit confused....Is over-rising really that bad?:( :(

Over-rising wastes energy, can unbalance you, and doesn't achieve anything. However, it's not so much the over-rising that's the real problem - it's how you land back in the saddle! If you over-rise and get out of balance, you're much more likely to thump down on the back of the saddle instead of landing gently, with your upper body tilted slightly forward ready for the next rise.

But of course some horses are nice and smooth, and others are definitely more bumpy, just as some saddles help you keep your position, while others put you out of balance straight away, so these things do make a difference :)

INSTEAD OF lifting yourself out of the saddle when you post, try to just tip your pelvis forward. The horses movement will lift you automatically so you dont need to put forth that effort. Just keep in mind to not alter your body position.

Has this horses trot got so much activity in behind that he's pushing you that extra amount up out of the saddle?

I know this is a bit late, but I want to tell you that my instructor hit upon a really good moment for me when she told me to "think down" whenever I rose to trot. She said:"think down into your heels" when on the upward movement. It's worked for me ever since.
