My old horse finally gave up and I lost him on Monday night. I was so upset. I have had him for six years but knew him before that. He was given to me to get my confidence back after an accident and he was semi-retired then.
He was so gentle we could put a child on him and often did. I know he had to go sometime but I was hoping it wouldn't be just yet. All that time I had him and this was the first time the vet had to come for him, he must have known it was the end.
At least I don't feel guilty about him as I knew he had a good life and I did my best for him, but I am going to miss him so much..

Very sorry to hear your news Rusk. You did the right thing and you've said he had a good life. What more could he want but a caring owner at the end who knew what needed to be done.
I hope I have the courage to see that when it comes time for my mare who is now 19 and I've owned for 15 years.
xxxxxxx & hugs

Awww!! It is difficult. I have a little Welsh A rescue pony. May 2001 he was given 5 months to live as he was suffering with poisoning from his previous home. He has improved since then and is still with us. I know he will go sometime, so I appreciate everyday with him, he is my little star. He is now thirty three and I have owned him for four years. At his old home he was seriously neglected and in a very bad state when we had him. I adore him, but I know he has had the best possible care so when he does go, it will be in the best possible circumstances. So long as your pony got all the love and attention it deserved right through to the end (which I am very sure it did! :) ) that is all that matters.
Just think of the good times you shared. The memories will never fade, they will always be as strong as when they happened. I'm sure he'll be as happy as Larry up in the big field of grass in heaven! :p

That's very sad. What a great loss it might be. But it seems like he was fine and happy until then, so he wasn't suffering or sick...

Oh, rusk, I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes for you.:(
I know how special those gentle old fellows are. Getting one's confidence back is a precious gift, and it makes one love the giver all the more, doesn't it?
I'm happy for him that he got to live out his semi-retirement with people he loved and who loved him back.
Big hugs.

Really very sorry Rusk. It's always comes too soon, even when you know deep down it's the right time.

I do feel for you. I lost Frank last July and I still find it hard to look in his stable and not see him standing there. It gets better but it never goes away.

Oh rusk, I know EXACTLY how you feel, one of my absolute favorite (I had 2) school horses was put down in december, because he'd never make it through the winter. I know how you feel, but don't think of his last moments, cherish the times you had together, good, bad, funny experiences.

It's now four days since it all happened and I can't quite believe he's gone. My youngster keeps going into his stable to look for him which makes me really upset. He always looked to the old boy for comfort and now he has to grow up.
I know I did my best for him and he was old but I do miss him.

I'm so sad for you Rusk - even sadder to know about the young horse missing him too....
Has the young one got any other companions?

I'm so sorry. I know it'll make it harder to bear when your youngster misses him, I lost my Jessie last year - she was my 15 yr old border collie, I'd had her from a pup. I also have a 13 yr old Jack Russell, Tess. She has missed Jess desparately - my thoughts are with you.

The youngster does have company, thank goodness, but the old guy was his special friend. I always took him with me when the 'baby' had to go anywhere. It made him so much calmer.
I hope he is happy wherever that is. I feel life is so cruel sometimes.
I was telling a friend about him and she said 'well, it was his time and we all have to go sometime.' But it certainly doesn't make it any easier.
Another person said to me 'are you getting another one?' as if they can be replaced so easily. If only it was that simple.

I'm sorry for your loss. I know there will be a time in my life when I will have to deal with the loss of a horse, but I am not looking forward to it. At least you know that he was as loved and as comfortable as possible up to the very end.

The vet was really good and made it much easier for me. I didn't want to have to make a decision if there was even a slight chance I could save him. He actually said it was the only option so it was taken out of my hands.
I am going to write to thank him as he was very patient and understood how hard it was.

There's really nothing I can say but to offer my condolences. I'm glad the vet was kind about it. You can't ever replace him, I know. Hoping that the time to ease the loss comes sooner rather than later.
