Weird roany markings on shoulder. Pony has no white on face, and fairly evenly maked except for this weird bit.

Is it a blood mark/shoulder? Or am I thinking of something else?

It looks like someone was painting his black bits....and ran out of paint just there! :D He is GORGEOUS!:) I don't know the proper name for the 'splodge'! Sorry - If no-one knows, you could maybe PM chev! She's brilliant at colours and markings and stuff! :)

Never occured to me it could be anything interesting. Might give me a bit of insight into his breeding if it is.

He's a skewbald with black points or tri coloured as far as I know. All his other splodgy bits are clearly defined, just that weird bit on his shoulder.

ooooh, I likes that horse!
I think that marking is quite common....I think the horse may have the sabino gene...possibly sobino tovaro...(I dont remember the any large markings on the face etc). I think sabino would account for raggedy edges and the appearance of "roaning".....lol.
I think that marking is "typical" for a horse with the overo/tobiano pattern/colour gene! Ive seen it a few times, my old cob had a similar marking...but he also had a big white blaze and white raggedy markings all up his legs.
Im not 100% sure exactly what that speckly marking is on your horses shoulder though - or if it has a specific name - it might just be a typical charactoristic!
Someone mentioned "bloody shoulder" Im pretty sure its not that....That occures in grey horses, that are of TB or Arabian bloodlines - infact my grey has it :D
We need Chev to confirm the "name" of that marking in the above horse...if it has one! Im not an expert in the slightest, so Im not sure if the horse is overo/tobiano or even tovaro....I dont know if the marking is typical of either one, which is why I questioned sobino (since "roan" was mentioned)....lol...
This reply was useless, wasnt it, lol:rolleyes:

D'aaaaw! That horse really is lovely!
erm.....it does look like bloody shoulder, doesnt it!
hhmmm.....unless the horse is greying out, Id still say its not that though - despite how similar it looks!
I think it may be a marking that is typical of sabino on tobiano or overo....Id guess tobiano on yours because the face is dark .....hhhhmmm....confusing!

We have had a few like that. Lovely defind markings, then a fuzzy patch, it's not uncommon in Shetlands.

It's not uncommon in broken coloured horses, especially if they carry sabino as well as another pattern (like tobiano).
This stallion (http://www.stallions-online.net/cgi-bin/stallions/viewads2.pl?a=9079) is one I bred (I bought his mum in foal) and as you can see has the same roany patches on both sides at the flank. (Well you can only see one flank but they're both the same)
