Hi, could anyone tell me if you need separate insurance for a horse trailer, or would it be covered by your car insurance anyway?

no you need seperate insurance for it.

Your car insurance *should* (though I would check) cover you for the act of towing but any damage you did to it would not be covered, no would theft, fire or vandalism.

Hi thanks for replying. Do you know if third parties would be covered if I damaged them with the trailer? i.e Backed it into someone else's care for instance? (but hopefully not!)

I think that would come under your car insurance, but as DITZ said better to check. Trailer policies cover damage to trailer/theft etc. but the actual driving side i.e. if you caused an accident would come under your vehicle policy...I think!

yes I believe (well this is the way my insurance works anyway but please check yours) that your liability is covered whilst using your trailer - ie something dropped off it and hit the car behind your car insurance would cover their damage. However it wouldnt cover your damage.

echo ditz.

you need separate insurance

car insurance covers you for towing, but not for what the trailer hits if in accident. trailer ins covers this and also for the trailer being stolen etc. as my 4x4 insurance on it own stands they cover for towing as they say its a 4x4 so expect people to tow with it
