Hiya every1,
I was reading the posts on this forum and I was wondering if ne of u could tell me if a pony could carry me and what type you wud advise, I an 5'5" and weigh 12st 4pds (a lot I know but I am still working off the christmas weigh from about 5yrs ago).
I currently have a Welsh Sec A, and a Connemara, both companions, and I was looking for something bigger but as I prefer ponies I was wonderin if there are ne I could ride.

Fell? Dales? Welsh Cob? Highland? Haflinger? Fjord? One of the smaller 'Heinz 57' mixed breed cobs? etc etc etc etc ....... Ummm....anything that isn't too fine really. I'm 5ft and about 9 stone (give or take a bit, depending whether it is after Xmas:D ) I ride a 13.2hh New Forest type, he is quite lightly built but carries me fine. I think all you need is something maybe slightly bigger (for your leg length I'm thinking of here, not that it is essential, taller people can ride smaller ponies), maybe 14hh or 14.2?
Hope this helps, there are loads of people on here riding all sorts of sizes...

I agree a dales/fell or a nice cob would suit.If you want a bit of go I would recommend something with welsh in it .I have a piebald gypsy type who is welshxcob he is about 14.1+hh I am about 5ft3 and weigh about 11 which isnt bad considering I have not long since had a baby.I have a friend who rides a dales type and she is 14 stone and about 5ft7 and doesnt look bad.
Look for something with plenty of bone(at the knee) as this is abetter idea of weight carriers.I say this as I had a tb and she has really thin legs and not much bone and I would say I was her weight limit....whereas Baileys legs are alot thicker!

Here is me on Rupert he is about 13.2 and as I said I am 5ft and (except for the enormous coat over the body protector and 2 jumpers) the general consensus is that we look okay, so I would have thought a 14.2 cobby type would be fine for you.

Im 5.0" & weigh bout 10stones & ride a 13.2hh Connemarra X Cremello! he's 14yrs old & weve done all sorts of stuff :p He never has a problem with carrying me & can still manage to bomb off up the field flat out & not stop.
Theres far 2 many people out there who think adults should ride horses COMPLETE RUBBISH theres a lady (if thats what u can call her :D ) who is too scared to ride her 16.2" (shes smaller than me)
IF THE PONY AINT STRUGGLING, THEN DONT WORRY :p

a Newfy would be able to carry you easily. I'm 5' 3" and weigh 12 stone - Libby is just shy of 14hh and carries me like I'm not even there.
Newfies are GREAT ponies.

Not being the lightest of riders - well quite heavy actually! How do you know if your too heavy for a horse? At my riding school i usally only ride Riz who is 16hh+ TBX, coz basically im really happy on him, ive only ever ridden one other horse (just get the feel of much more forward going horse).
When I get to the stage of being able to buy my own horse, how do I know by looking at it if it can carry me? Im always looking at ads but never know if im too heavy! (im 5ft6" and the wrong side of 13st  )

a welsh cob or highland could carry you easily kezzabelle. they say with the native ponies that they can carry a stone for every hand in height. petal is 13.3 and carries 14 stone without batting an eyelid. that is the top end of what she could carry, but a bigger forester could easily take you for longer or harder work, and a welsh cob or highland would have no trouble!
finer breeds are less up to weight, so you need to go bigger, but a 15hh cob type should be fine for you.

I am 5'10 so usually ride something 15hh and over usually cobby type so my legs dont look to long on a chunky built type!!
ALTHOUGH! When my daughter had a shetland he was being a real sod..so I sat on his back... lol he walked round nicely on the bit!! Then hurtled of STOPPED and Bucked me of!! hehe much to the amusement of everyone watching!!
Where I used to work With driving ponies they had 3 Welsh's I also excercised them ridden they were very strong and didnt mind me atall..they did 3 day BHDTA trials so were very fit and strong.. It alldepends on breeding more than size..If Igot on aL/W 15hh I would look far to big for it...however with for instance an Irish Cob look fine on it!
I would recommed a cob as I love them lol!! also if you got a 15hh sort o height you wuldnt look small on it,yet h/she would last you a lifetime so you woulnt have to part with if Outgrown
