View Full Version : Any ideas for cheap feed bins?

I'm looking for cheap rodent proof bins. I currently have a metal dustbin which works well but it doesn't quite fit a complete sack of chaff making it ideal rat food. Ideally I need space for two different bags of feed so I really need one of those horse feed double bins but they're so expensive I'd be really grateful if anyone had any suggestions for alternatives?

Many thanks:)

we used to use old chest freezers :)

now we have metal bins (think they're from a flour mill, but not sure)

not a great deal of help to most of you but we often do clearance jobs at work that have chest freezers on them and we have to pay to dump them. Perhaps give a few local clearance companies a ring and see if they want you to take one off your hands?

I have a mini wheelie bin which holds a full bale of Alfa-a and is easy to move around for sweeping :)

Where can I steal a wheelie bin? What a fab idea-mobile! Rats ate through my plastic feed bin lid this week-little swines.:(

I use heavy duty plastic boxes from places like B&Q cheap and cheerful and yet to have any micey pals in them :)

You can buy them from B&Q or depending on your morals "liberate them" if your council are good at dishing out replacements or if you've managed to recycle all your rubbish and only put out one tiny black binliner of rubbish a fortnight ;)

I just got some plastic "toy" boxes with clip on lids from £stretcher. 110litre capacity and you can get 2 for £19. Just filled one with a brand new bag of chaff and there was room to spare (no left over chaff...hurrah)

Used another one for spare rugs. Managed to fit 4 5ft 6 turnout rugs in one. (stackable too so space saving!) Fairly heavy duty too.

i use bins from poundstretchers. Need to get a new lid tho as one of the ponies got into the feed room and broke my lid. Never had any sign of rodent chewage though.

I've always used two black plastic bins I bought off the local market, I can just about squeeze a bag of Happy Hoof into each one - tho I generally have to open the bag and poke about (think its cos its vaccum packed or something). I think they were only £5 each. They'd have to be clever rats to get into them too - the lids have a click on system!! (Mind you judging by the size of 'em near me I wouldn't be at all surprised!)

I have just your usual black dustbin. however i have found a trick...dont empty the alfa out into the bin, it wont fit! instead, open the op of the alfa bag, then put the whole bag in the bin. after a bit of pushing, it all goes in a beauty!
