You should have an experienced horseperson or instructor with you when you learn to jump. It isnt safe to learn on your own, by trial and error or instructions given over a message board. The number one thing is safety. Maybe do you have a friend who knows how and could help you learn how to jump?

I agree with Sparkle. Its always a good idea to have an experienced person on the ground to point out any mistakes that you are making, adjust jumps and be there for safety.
Just start off slow and low and work your way up. Learn how your horses striding is working and when to go into jumping position. Practise on the flat riding in normal position for 10 strides, 2 point position for 10 strides and then jumping position for 10 stides etc etc on both reins.

Never use trial and error. I used it when I was learning to jump, even though i was under the supervision of a friend who was telling me what to do.
I got terrible habits from it and to get me out of the habits I had to go back to the basics of holding onto the mane, which made me feel wick. If you try to jump on your own it will be a case of 'one step forward, two steps back'
