15ml Citronella Oil (can add more if want it stronger)
2 tablespoons Meths
1 tablespoon Fairy Liquid
4 tablespoons Vinegar
1 mug Strong Tea
Top up with two lites of water.
Have used this for a few years and it works very well, expecially on midges!!

I used basically the same as Baffled2 but instead of meths I use Neem oil.
Neem oil is great stuff and can be used neat. A natural fly repellant and gently antiseptic so great for easing those sore itchy skin problems.
My little one had very sore eyes last year due to flies and I would use neem oil round her eyes every evening (obviously not in hot sunlight...it is an oil after all) and within a week her eyes had healed and there were no flies to be seen.
When neat it does smell really bad, but works well.

For the Mane and Tail, how much of each do you need to use??

Don't know about fly spray, but all the top grooms apparently recommend using furniture polish for mane and tail conditioner. Haven't tried it yet, but anything less than approx £6 - 7 a bottle's got to be better.

I use the above plus 25ml olbas oil and 100ml neem oil, and 25ml benzyl benzoate, works a treat for my sweet itch sufferer. ;)

just a quick warning when using citronella..be careful how much you use as if its too strong (no matter what its mixed with) it can burn/cause bad reactions(hence why most tack shops dont sell it..)..my dad usually puts 3 drops to a pint and that seems to be strong enough without harming us or my horse(sometimes when the flies are out in force we use a little bit more) although we also wash our rugs in citronella aswell and that helps alot. We also make a stronger solution for our stable with between 10 and 15 drops but that is in a separate bottle just incase.

All of the contents are very diluted (with approx 1.5 litres of water) and it doesn't cause any problems or sting when it comes into contact with your skin or with the horse. This recipe has been around for many years and is also used by everyone else on my yard to very good effect - we are on a large estate which is the Midge capital of Scotland!!!!:) You can buy Citronella oil from most chemists.
