Hi, i know this question has probably been asked before but i have looked in the archives and cant find an answer.
My pony gets sweet itch and i treat him by using switch and lots of garlic in his food.(not the switch!)
Cracker(my pony) has not got any bold patches or whatever but the last few days he has totally ruined his tail. Its all broken off and looks a mess.
Whats the best way to look after his tail now?
Can i bandage it while hes out in the field?
I have tried using Listerene all over the tail but he keeps on rubbing, what can i do?

When I use listerene - I mix it with baby oil - equal portions in a spray bottle and then spray it on the tail. I do massage it in. The baby oil helps keep the skin moist and the listerene stops the itching.

Don't know if that will help.

My pony used to get it badly, and i now use coopers fly and sweet itch control, i have found it does help and practical stop it. if this does not work u could consider a summer sheet with tail flap covering although these are expensive! hope this helps

I don't know why the switch lotion didn't work because it always has done for myself and my friends. Were you using the correct dosage?
Another option (but rather expensive!) is to buy one of those Rambo flybuster rugs 'cos they really do work, something similar will do, or why not buy some light fabric and make your own!
I have also heard what Cindi said about using baby oil and listerene and that has worked for friends.
With regards to bandaging Cracker's tail I wouldn't because you should not leave the bandage on for more than a couple of hours.
Hope this is of any use to you
